Hi
[edit]Hello! I got your email. I would certainly be willing to help you. I don't have much free time, as I have a lot of schoolwork, but I'll help where I can.
Old Gala House, in my opinion, looks like a pretty good start. It just needs, as the template suggests, inline citations. (It could also do with some more info, if there is any.)
Thanks and happy editing, Hardtofindaname 05:54, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
- You can ask another user for help if you don't think I'll be able to provide enough help with the time I have.. I'm fine with that :)
- To do the inline citations, just do <ref>....citation....</ref> and at the end of the article create a section called References and put
== References ==
{{reflist}}
- You might want to take a look at citation templates like {{Citation}} to put in between the <ref> tags. Hope that helps a little :)
- No problem. Shout when you need me. :) Hardtofindaname 10:23, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
Re:Inline citations
[edit]Inline citations are references in the text that appear as a number after sentences in articles, like. [1] You can add them by putting the link inside <ref> and </ref> tags. This will be clearer to you if you read Wikipedia:Citing sources carefully and look at the source of some articles that use them. —SpaceFlight89 18:55, 10 October 2009 (UTC)
Care
[edit]You could perhaps check your work more carefully and in particular ask yourself "why is the link I have just created red" - as in Newton St. Boswalls (here). — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 00:34, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
- Why was my page deleted? (Bowden,Scottish Borders?--80.47.114.194 (talk) 07:13, 13 October 2009 (UTC) Jimmydenham (talk) 07:59, 13 October 2009 (UTC)
"Hi, I could't find any other way of contact." You don't need any other way of contact! I would have found your message here quite soon but if you want a quick response, use the {{talkback}} tag. I provided a link: (here) above. Did you follow that link? Is it to a deleted article? Have you tried looking at special:contributions/Jimmydenham? Follow this link and tell me what you see after "13 October 2009 RHaworth (talk | contribs)". As I said, be more careful. (Just in case you still don't get it: you put a full stop at the end of the title.) — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 08:50, 13 October 2009
Help!
[edit]help me I cannot load my references on to the correct area (I'm new to this) my article is Bonkyl Kirk.
- Comments:
- No one will ever respond to [[help me]]. If you had typed {{helpme}} they would have. Can you see the difference?
- Please always sign talk page comments with ~~~~
- When you were creating Bonkyl Kirk did you see a comment "see Wikipedia:Footnotes on how to create references". Did you consider following the link? You need go no further than Duns to see refs in use - open the page in edit mode and look at the wiki markup.
- talking of wiki markup, when creating an ordered list, the arseterix goes at the start of the line, not the end!
- the website for Bonkyl Kirk is rather vague about where it is. I have given the grid ref for Edrom kirk, which I believe is different. Please correct.

Articles for deletion nomination of Spott, East Lothian
[edit]I have nominated Spott, East Lothian, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Spott, East Lothian. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.
Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. [Belinrahs|talktome⁄ ididit] 18:28, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
- As you have probably seen, this article is not going to be deleted. It may possibly be of interest to you to know that I looked at the edit history of the editor who proposed it for deletion, and i am not sure if I have ever case where so large a proportion of an editor's actions is to suggest deletion of articles. JamesBWatson (talk) 22:57, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
Citations
[edit]Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia; you have been doing some very good work here. However, one thing you have tended not to do is give citations for where your information comes from. For example, in Bonkyl Kirk you say "there has been a religious establishment at Bonkyl since the early 12th century": evidently you must have got this information from somewhere, and it would help if you could say what your sources are. Apart from the fact that where the information comes from may be useful and/or interesting to some users, it is essential to be able to justify information included, as information which is not referenced to a source is likely sooner or later to be questioned, and perhaps removed. You can find information about how to cite sources at Wikipedia:Citing sources. Also please feel welcome to contact me at my talk page if you wish to ask me anything. JamesBWatson (talk) 18:31, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
- When I wrote the above comment I had not noticed that Spott, East Lothian had been nominated for deletion. It now becomes essential, rather than just desirable, to give citations, unless you are willing to see the article deleted. JamesBWatson (talk) 18:36, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
Smailholm, Scottish Borders
[edit]I have just found your request for help at User talk:Jimmydenham/Smailholm, Scottish Borders. I assume that you mean that the user page is now ready to be released as an article, and I have done so, at Smailholm, Scottish Borders. I have also made a slight improvement in layout. Let me know if there are any problems. JamesBWatson (talk) 18:47, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
Bonkyl Kirk
[edit]JamesBWatson thanks I have learned more in the last 15 minures after a couple of sentences from you. I do have more idea now about inlin citations etc. thanks - James --Jimmydenham (talk) 19:58, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit]I plan to insert anoter article Friday or Saturday. as soon as it is finished I shall let you know and hear your comments. I know what you are saying and it is so true, we are all new at one pont or another. As a writer, I do refer to Wikipedian a lot, not for that writer's actual comments but to refer to the references the writer has given. I find it a quick and useful reference point.
I know one or two articles on the site, which I know contains a lot of inaccurate information, I would love to edit or, at least, inform the editor who uploaded then. Unfortunately I know the author of the articles and I don't think it would go down too well. I shall get round to doing it in due course though. --Jimmydenham (talk) 20:28, 15 October 2009 (UTC) Incidentally thamks agaon for Smailholm, you made a good job of it.--Jimmydenham (talk) 20:30, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
Legerwood Kirk
[edit]I have tidied up Spott, East Lothian and uploaded Legerwood Kirk, Scottish Borders today--Jimmydenham (talk) 12:50, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
- interesting start article. I've done a bit of a tidy up but the references need expanding. If you have any more info please add it or if you're unsure how to leave a message on my talk page. NtheP (talk) 13:10, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
Glad to help. If there's anymore you know where I am. NtheP (talk) 15:00, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
You have been a great help. In truth, that was one area I have worried about and you have solved it at a stroke. I am sure I'll be back in touch but, in the meantime, many, many thanks. --Jimmydenham (talk) 15:03, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
Dunglass Church
[edit]The only reverted edits were to an unregistered user. I'm assuming that was you looking at the talk page for that edit. I don't see anything unconstructive about them ither than one where you used the wrong characters so instead of a wikilink it cam out as 99Sir Alexander Home00 instead of Sir Alexander Home. Reverting the entire edit for that seems a bit steep. Don't get disheartened about it. It happens to us all at times, as the warning messages which are standard templates can be a bit brusque at times. I'll put the edits back in and see what happens. It could be this edit was getting 'upset' because there was not edit summary. NtheP (talk)
Ok done. The only thing I can thunk is the Sir Alexander Home bit. Which even when wikilinked is unclear as there are several. I think looking at the dates it's Sir Alexander Home of that Ilk, father of Alexander Home, 1st Lord Home - unless you know better :-) There isn't an article for Sir A of that Ilk hence the redlink. NtheP (talk) 21:16, 16 October 2009 (UTC) Thank you--Jimmydenham (talk) 21:17, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
You're right
[edit]I called a friend of min who works for Historic Scotland and it was Alexander, father of the 1st Earl of Home who upgrade the church to collegiate status. - Thanks--Jimmydenham (talk) 14:34, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
- It would be great to get a citation to that effect. NtheP (talk) 10:02, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Formatting
[edit]I've just looked over the Lyne Church article and I'd point out a couple of things.
1) Use of [[ ]] Make sure you don't get punctuation inside the brackets [[Glasgow.]] won't find Glasgow whereas [[Glasgow]]. will. Use preview before you save and if a link is in red it means you've possibly got the formatting wrong if you're sure the article referred to exists.
2) In date ranges use – not just a hyphen.
NtheP (talk) 10:02, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks again for your help and advice--Jimmydenham (talk) 10:25, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Grid references
[edit]Do you have grid references for all these churches etc? If so one of the things we can do to improve the articles is add a co-ordinate tag. See Template:Coord on how to do this. Alterntively put a list of grid refs on here and I'll add them. NtheP (talk) 13:01, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
To be honest, I went through the pages and it was all 'double dutch' to me, I'm sorry. I already have a grid ref. on the page for Bonkyl Kirk The others are as followa : Prestongrange Parish Church NT3882 7456
Stobo Kirk NT1828 3765 Lyne Kirk NT 1917 4050 Dunglass Collegiate Church NT7659 7190
Thanks, --Jimmydenham (talk) 15:01, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
Useful link for you
[edit]Since most of the historic churches about which you are writing are listed buildings, you may want to look up the relevant listed building report when you are researching them. The Historic Scotland search page can be found here. Please add the page to the relevant category, eg Category:Category A listed buildings, Category:Category B listed buildings or Category:Category C listed buildings, and Category:Listed churches in Scotland. Hope you find it useful. Regards, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 10:49, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
- No problem! Don't worry, there is no pressure, just do what you can - I have been here 4 years and still learning new stuff! Take it easy and don't rush, I have found, is the best way of avoiding mistakes. Kind regards, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 11:32, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
File copyright problem with File:Stained_glass_window_at_Stobo_Kirk.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Stained_glass_window_at_Stobo_Kirk.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Chris G Bot (talk) 00:20, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
- Another tip for you when uploading Geograph images:
- On the Geograph photo page, click on the link under the photo that says "Find out how to reuse this Image";
- Scroll down to where it says "Wikipedia Template for image page."
- Copy the text in the window below, and paste it into the basic upload window at Commons.
- The result is that the license, photo location, photographer, and a backlink are retained, so there's no need to fill these in yourself. I only found this myself recently, saves loads of time! Regards, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 12:16, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
Please take care...
[edit]Hi Jimmy. Having just edited your Ayton Parish Church, I would urge you once again not to rush. I found an article littered with mis-spelling, poor grammar, and badly formatted links. Please take time when drafting an article to:
- check your spelling, there are plenty of spell-checkers available to help;
- check grammar, punctuation, and phrasing, this is quite hard to do when you are typing away, I know, but read back what you have written to make sure it makes sense;
- in particular, make sure section headers are right. "Early minister in Post Refomation" is both mis-spelled and ungrammatical (I changed it to "List of Post-Reformation ministers");
- check references and external links. For example, a ref in the Ayton Parish Church page linked here, which isn't going to tell the reader anything;
- one specific point, use hyphens (-) for things like "north-west", use – for ranges, such as 1845–1856.
Reading through Wikipedia:Writing better articles may give you further assistance and pointers. You are doing a great job of adding some interesting and worthwhile material to the encyclopedia, so don't let my carping put you off! But remember that there is no deadline. If you take a bit more care in drafting, the end result will be something you can be a wee bit more proud of. Your contributions will also be more appreciated by Wikipedians, and most importantly, more useful to readers. Thanks, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 11:45, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
- Hello again, you certainly seem keen to learn which is great. Look under the edit window when you are editing a page, below the Save page / Show preview buttons, you should see a small pull-down menu with the word "Insert", and a row of symbols next to it. Click on one of the symbols and it will appear at the cursor in the edit window. Pull down the menu and choose "Latin", the symbols will change to a selection of accented vowels and other special characters, including æ. (I found the pull-down didn't work on Internet Explorer so I now use Firefox). Having said all that, to get Fasti ecclesiæ scoticanæ, I simply copied and pasted it from the Internet Archive page! Regards, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 16:54, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
Article Reviews
[edit]Why does it sometimes take so long for an article to be reviewed?--Jimmydenham (talk) 22:31, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Re: Traquair
[edit]You need to move the article to a new title, using the "move" tab at the top of the page, next to edit and history tabs. Type in the corrected title, and give a reason (ie. "misplaced comma in article title"). RHaworth has done it for you. Cheers. Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 13:07, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
Gordon
[edit]Great work on Gordon, Berwickshire but as this seems to be the only place of that name in the Scottish Borders council area, I have moved the article to Gordon, Scottish Borders, in accordance with Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#Scotland. This also helps with several redlinks in existing articles which are to the latter name. Links to the previous name will automatically redirect so this shouldn't affect your work on the article. — Richardguk (talk) 04:38, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
Unreviewed article tags
[edit]{{helpme}} I have two articles which are several weeks old, they are still showing as new, unreviewed articles, can any explain or help me please.--Jimmydenham (talk) 10:10, 26 November 2009 (UTC) The articles concerned are Yester Chapel and Stichill Kirk Thank you--Jimmydenham (talk) 10:10, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
- Both look fine - I've taken the tags off. Once they get past the New Page Patrol, often nobody looks again. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 11:50, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
- You can sidestep these tags by creating articles directly, such as via a redlink. The new article wizard automatically adds them, but if you just go straight into editing a blank page, they won't be attached. Regards, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 17:18, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
- Well, if you want to create a page, the easiest way is to type the article name into the search box and click 'go'. If there is no article with that name, you get search results, but with a line that says, "You may create the page "(redlink here)", but consider checking the search results below to see whether it is already covered." To create the page, click on the redlink and start editing. Regards, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 13:30, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
Re: Firefox
[edit]For a general comparison, there are some reviews here and here, a bit old but still largely relevant. In terms of Wikipedia, there are more customisation options and tools for Firefox than for IE. Also small things like columns of footnotes don't work at all in IE. Compare tools for Firefox with tools for IE. You may or may not want to use this stuff, if not there's not much practical difference between the two. I managed fine with IE for years. Regards, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 13:32, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
Coat of Arms - Hay of Linplum
[edit]Go ahead and use image with a link to the commons page. As the artist I have no problem with its use with or without reference to myself, only I used elements from other artists - so best to link to the common's page. Yours ever, Czar Brodie (talk) 09:21, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
Prestongrange Parish Church
[edit]Jimmy, thanks for your contribution about Prestongrange. Don't think we've met - I'm the minister. Your article was recently corrupted by a couple of the youngsters in the church. They gave me a good laugh, but I have removed their efforts - my first foray into editing Wikipedia. Made a couple of other small changes (eg reformation 1560), but once you start where do you stop? Prestongrange Parish Church
[edit]Hi Pansmanser, Thanks for your help. I haven't been on for quite a while, been busy doing other things but Wikipedia can be very addictive and it is difficult to stop. I do a bit of writing and constantly refer to Wikipedia but always check the sources provided by the given Wikipedian then I check the sources, I suppose it is a lazy man's research. Some articles I have noticed on Prestonpans, 1.e. Northfield House and Hamilton House are actually quite inaccurate but I haven't had the heart, yet to go and alter them. I do enjoy churches, in fact one of my favourite subjects. Thanks again for your help. --— Rod talk 13:56, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
Somerset levels
[edit]Hi, Thanks for your comments about the Somerset levels article. As far as the extent goes.. in the north are the Mendip Hills ie a line from Wells to Cheddar, Axbridge & across to Brean Down. In the south down to the Polden Hills ie Street, Somerset & across to Bridgwater. Hope that makes sense? As far as the churches go have you seen List of towers in Somerset there are also articles on all the Grade I churches in Somerset & something about the others in the village articles.— Rod talk 13:56, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
- What you may have seen emerging from the mists may have been Glastonbury Tor (thats what I've seen in the way you describe) or possibly Burrow Mump depending on where you were. I've seen the blanket of mist like that a few times, always on autumn mornings, but I think it depends on humidity, lack of wind etc so I'm not sure if there is a specific season. I have some vague thoughts of trying to get Somerset Levels to FA status, but River Parrett is going 1st. I'm also working on getting all Somerset towns to GA - perhaps you'd like to join Wikipedia:WikiProject Somerset & help? — Rod talk 13:56, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
