Mont Blanc Tunnel

[edit]

This is from personal experience, but the rules of the tunnel and the closed road are objectively factual. Why do you keep deleting what I wrote?

I'm trying to document this to help others, that tunnel is an absolute nightmare. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.247.54.73 (talk) 15:39, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am deleting it because what you have written is personal research which is against wikipedia policies: see WP:OR for an explanation of this. If you want to let people know of the problems with the tunnel then find an appropriate reference that will back up your claims or post it on a more appropriate forum.Jenafalt (talk) 15:42, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, well I want to help people, but if there are others standing in my way I'm not going to grind my patience for it. Sucks for them, there are many hours to lose in that hell hole. :p —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.247.54.73 (talk) 16:16, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article not category

[edit]

No one ever raeds category talk pages apart from bots and weird prsons like self - i wont go into that here - if you have a problem with how an article sits in a category - got the article not the category - and either change the title of the article (learn how to use move) - or take it up at the article talk page SatuSuro 09:49, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alex Boyd article deletion query

[edit]

Hello Jenafalt, Iam an art historian based at Glasgow University who has been struggling with the Alex Boyd article for some time now (I'm new to wiki). I'd prefer that you helped me maintain it rather than delete it outright. In the next week I will fill out the article properly now that I know how to use referencing properly. This will also help to explain why he is a notable Scottish Photographer.AyrshireartsAyrshirearts 14:51, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alex Boyd prod removal

[edit]

Hi there. I was just wondering if you could explain why you said that Alex Boyd was potentially notable. I am cleaning up the Scottish Photographer cat entries and this article struck me as non-notable while I was attempting to edit it to Wikipedia standards. If you could let me know what drew you to the conclusion that it is notable I may be able to fix the article up. Otherwise I will send it to an AFD. Thanks. Jenafalt (talk) 08:42, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Because simple Google searches reveal coverage of projects done in association with noteworthy, even major, musical artists. The Enchantress Of Florence (talk)`
  • Are you now satisfied with the Alex Boyd article? Iam aware that by the end of the month there will be a BBC report on his exhibition in Bucharest (which is a major international project). I have also put refrences in the article, shown that he has been given credit by Harry Benson (as well as Scottish Photography magazine), and worked with some important figures in the music industry. He is also due to exhibit with one of Britains most celebrated photographers Bill Brandt - and I thought that was also notable as the show is being put on by the

Scottish Arts Council. What else can be done to make it a strong article and remove the deletion notices? This is not something I want to do without your and Rgtaylor's consultation

Adrian Brannan

[edit]

Adrian Brannan did recieve alot of media attention when he first started showing his photo-collage works, and his work is held in several important public locations across the City. I think this makes him a notable contemporary photographer. I do believe however that the article could perhaps do with better references, as well as some proof of his work outside of Scotland. Iam currently working in London, but will try and do some more research when I get back up North on him. I also intend to expand the Scottish Photographers section. I have also added more info to the Alex Boyd article concerning his recent Romanian work.

[edit]

Hi Jenafalt, sorry, I didn't mean to delete that section. I swear all I did was delete the word 'underage', but if you look at the edit summary some weird stuff happened, messing with the heading hierarchy and vanishing that last section. It looks like my edit got mixed up with one of your earlier ones. I blame the database error fairies. - Aucitypops (talk) 07:22, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Jenafalt. I replied to you on my own talk page, and I'm about to add more there. (If you feel like replying, please reply there or on the article's talk page.) -- Hoary (talk) 01:13, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The page of Yahoo "master photographers" invites examination. Most of the people on it are very well known (the kind who rate an entry in at least one of Photography from 1839 to Today [Taschen]], 20th Century Photography [Taschen], The Photo Book [Phaidon], The Oxford Companion to the Photograph). A minority are not. One of the minority is a German who portrayed "actionists" among others. To me, "actionists" suggests a non-native writer of English. Click on the link to that photographer, and one reads of photography for others' books, books that remained unpublished, etc; it seems that he's of some notability, but that this notability is a little puffed up. Might he too have an entry in WP? Yes indeed he has, long, lavishly illustrated, and utterly unreferenced. All this seems compatible with QT Luong's description of Yahoo mastery. -- Hoary (talk) 00:47, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rodney Lough, Jr. is now at AfD. Hoary (talk) 21:49, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Jenafalt, is there a way to speak 'off line' and direct? Rodneyloughjr (talk) 16:12, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

hi Rodney. I really prefer to undertake all my wikipedia discussions via this talk page (if they are personal) or via the article's talk page (if they are about article content). Best wishes. Jenafalt (talk) 16:31, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Australian photographers

[edit]

I've just noticed that you say on your user page that you're working on Australian photographers. I'm sorry to say that the names on display in Category:Australian photographers mean nothing to me, with the exceptions of Dupain, Hurley, Moffatt, and Newton. For my own, WP-unrelated purposes, can you point me to an introductory text about postwar photography of Australia? Presumably most of the photographers would be Australian, but their nationality is of no interest to me. I want depiction of actual Australia; I'm not interested in the staged (even what's not fashion or "erotica"), self-portraits, the postcardy and conventionally "beautiful", stuff created primarily in order to sell at high prices, etc. I want to see it in books, I want quality, and I'm partial to B/W. Fame and financial success aren't necessary; I'm delighted to learn of obscurities who merit investigation. For a much smaller island a long way away, I'd immediately point to at least some of the work by Barry, Clunn, Davies, Frank, Godwin, Hurn, Killip, Konttinen, Larrain, Luskačová, Mayne, Parr, Ray-Jones, (Graham) Smith, Steele-Perkins, Sykes, and Ward (not all of whom have articles here). A number of these of course were visitors, a number are pretty obscure. Australia has a much smaller population but I'm sure it has had, or has attracted, people who've done good stuff. Ideas, or ideas on where to get ideas? If you're in a mood to reply, please do so right here. Thank you! -- Hoary 04:31, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hoary, It is my better half (currently off hiking) who is the expert on photography - I am a semi-knowledgable pedant with a big need for procrastination avenues. When my live in photography expert returns from the hills I will pass on your queries. Best wishes and thanks for your help with the Lough article - his self-promotional skills are incredible! Jenafalt (talk) 20:19, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

They are indeed. The more I read of them, the more I tremble -- whether with awe, fear, or laughter. I hope your walk-out live-in is having an enjoyable and productive time; don't push the questions on him or her till the film is safely developed. (Meanwhile, this for your unintended amusement.) -- Hoary (talk) 00:15, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Jena, please ask your "better half" whether s/he saw the Wild places exhibition of Richard Green's extraordinary large-format photography, at the National Gallery in Canberra last year. Although I rarely visit Canberra, I happened to be there at the right time for this treat. I have the brochure in front of me.
I see that there is no WP article on him. I haven't the skills or knowledge to write one. Perhaps this oversight might be mentioned at the appropriate WikiProject? Tony (talk) 10:20, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've recently learned of a newish Autralian member of Magnum, Trent Parke. I've seen just one photo by him in a book and a few in tiny reproductions on the web (notably here). What I see I like a lot. Unfortunately his books are out of print and, when they turn up, copies go for silly prices. -- Hoary (talk) 21:57, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Trent Parke is one of the top Australian photographers and I really like his work - it seems an oversight that we don't have a Wikipedia page on him. I had a chance to buy some of his photos in 2001 quite cheaply and kick myself now that I didn't. He does alot of work with his partner Narelle Autio. I saw a great exhibition of their work in Sydney a few years ago. It was from a roadtrip they had done around Australia. I will think about putting a page together for him when I have some energy Jenafalt (talk) 07:07, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
First go at new Trent Parke page up now. Jenafalt (talk) 20:21, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good start!
Ideally, exhibitions should be sourced to the exhibitors and awards to the award-givers. I made a small start in that direction but stopped because energy and time don't suffice.
The Stills Gallery is quite a find. There they are, photos of the kind I was looking for. Parke's are toward the bleaker end, but even at the most pleasant end they're nothing like the wallpaper promoted elsewhere in Wikipedia. -- Hoary (talk) 01:26, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Whew, I actually managed to get hold of a worthwhile book of photography in Australia: Centre Bounce. Any further recommendation would be welcome! -- Hoary (talk) 00:58, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Andy Biggs Afd

[edit]

Thankyou for alerting me about the andy biggs article. The page was not listed in the log either, which is presumably why nobody had commented about it, so I simply renominated it with twinkle. I'm not sure why it didn't work the first time. Perhaps I closed the dialog box too soon. God Emperor (talk) 12:18, 20 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Suicide rate

[edit]

Hi Jenafalt! Thanks for taking care of the suicide rate list. As a comment to your recent edits you wrote: checked and updated statistics on list until Finland with latest data from WHO. Will finish update later. I just wonder if you also checked the year column. The latest data from WHO appear to be from 2008 but I cannot find any 2008 data in the list. bamse (talk) 11:02, 5 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

k.d. lang

[edit]

There's really no way to render the first letter in lowercase on a Wikipedia article. The closest we can do is use {{lowercase}} to at least make it render in all lowercase at the top of the page. Same thing with pages like iPod, which is technically at "IPod" due to software limitations.
