Scottish Union Flag

[edit]

On the Scottish Union Flag edits - we want to get accurate information up. There is enough dubious information out there without adding to it. I would prefer it if that flag had never existed, but there is indisputable contemporary evidence of it.

Many sources are later. The one used to prove that the flag existed by 1606 is a doubtful interpretation, though not inconceivable. However by 1693 there is a clear picture of the flag flying over Edinburgh Castle. In 1707 the English Garter King of Arms drew it in his papers and noted that the Scottish negotiating team wanted that one, their version of the union flag, to be the flag of Great Britain.

In short, there can be no reasonable doubt that the Scottish variant union flag existed and saw some official use on land by the 1690's. I suspect it might have been created only then (a troubled time for relations between the sister kingdoms) but my speculation is only speculation.

This is one tiny paragraph in a big article. We still have to stick to the facts, however uncomfortable.

I agree with the need for accuracy which is why I have requested citations missing for some claims made and added failed verification for citations that do not support some claims made.
"indisputable contemporary evidence of it." - What contemporary evidences there?
"by 1693 there is a clear picture of the flag flying over Edinburgh Castle" - This is not true. The first edition of 'Theatrum Scotiae' did not contain the drawing of Edinburgh castle and nobody: has yet determined in which edition it first appeared. But the second edition was in 1710 (seven editions in all: 1693, 1710, 1718, 1719, 1797, 1814, 1874).
"no reasonable doubt that the Scottish variant union flag existed and saw some official use on land by the 1690's" - clearly there is doubt. Bartram's reference say's it was unofficial and 'Theatrum Scotiae' does not support use during 1690s. I don't agree with that (talk) 11:50, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for that. I will keep any further observations on this to Talk:Union_Flag#Scottish_Union_Flag. Howard Alexander (talk) 17:12, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Whilst curious as to your background and editing history, I must confess that this...
