JSTOR

Will it be too much if I request for another JSTOR paper? It's for the Banglapedia article, particularly "History of encyclopedias in Bangladesh" section. The paper in concern is Felix Carey by D.G.E. Hall, published in The Journal of Religion, Vol. 12, No. 4 (Oct., 1932), pp. 473-492 (link). I have a sneaking suspicion that it might have useful stuff on Vidhyaharabali, the first Bengali encyclopedia on record. Aditya(talkcontribs) 04:49, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

Check your email. (The attachment is 1.1MB+, can your office email handle this?). --Ragib (talk) 05:01, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. And sorry, my suspicion proved to be misled. It was on Carey's exploits in Myanmar. But, will come handy when an article on the person is started. Aditya(talkcontribs) 03:33, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Great! Hope this will generate a lot of enthusiasm. Arman (Talk) 13:03, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

A question

Dear Ragib bhai, I understand that all works by US Government are in the public domain. Does that include works of / sponsored by US embassies? More specifically US Embassy, Bnagladesh site has several reports on Bangladesh under - Key State Department Reports - section. Are these public domain materials? Can we freely copy paste text from these reports into wikipedia articles?

I have also posted this question on Wikiproject Bangladesh talk page. If you'd like to reply, please do it there for the benefit of all WikiProject Bangladesh members.Arman (Talk) 13:19, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Habib Wahid

An article that you have been involved in editing, Habib Wahid, has been listed for deletion. If you are interested in the deletion discussion, please participate by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Habib Wahid. Thank you. J Milburn (talk) 18:03, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Protection

You protected Religious violence in India but I believe there is a discussion taking place as opposed to a revert war. You can keep it protected but I also want a third opinion from someone such as yourself, can you take a look. I believe it suffers from Undue weight because events such as the Moplah rebellion, Partition riots, Anti-Sikh riots, Ayodhya riots, Kashmir violence and Gujarat violence are given the same amount of weight as the 2007 Orissa violence and less weight than vandalism of Christian churches and Buddhist stupas. If an admin such as yourself does't agree with me then I will cease to revert war. Darrowen (talk) 22:48, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

I'd like to be totally uninvolved at this moment about the content, so I'll request you to discuss the whole thing in the article's talk page. I found an escalated edit war and cycle of reverts between you and another editor, so I think both of you need a cooling off period to discuss things in the talk page. The edit war just means your current discussion is going no where ... so please discuss all issues in the article talk page. Thanks. --Ragib (talk) 00:22, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

The Competition

Dear Ragib Bhai, we are now all set to move to the next phase of the competition that we discussed earlier on WikiProject Bangladesh Outreach page. For this purpose, I have started the Deshipidian 2008 page and have also drafted an email for mass circulation to promote the competition. Please review the page and the draft email and let me know if you have any comments. I'm proposing that we circulate the email widely starting February 1, 2008. In addition, if BDOSN can help promote this competition through some newspaper coverage that would be fantastic. Yours truly Arman (Talk) 09:18, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

Welcome

Thank you vaia for your message. Receiving message from a person like you is very encouraging. I will try my best to keep continuous contribution in Wikipedia ("Wikiproject Bangladesh"). I am always in intense pressure with my study. Whenever I can manage time I try to spend it in wikipedia. I always keep telling my university friends about the position of Bangladesh in wikipedia and to support wikipedia by donating photos. I have also forwarded the link of your "Chobi chai chobi. Din-na ekta chobi" somewhereinblog article to many of my friends. I am also campaigning in my hi5 groups about wikipedia. I love wikipedia. I love Bangladesh. I need your blessing. --Farsad (talk) 13:49, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

There is a debate is going on in the talk page of the article about the incluson of an image. User Nikkul in defence of his argument is continuously making personal attacks against me, giving examples from other articles. This user is making wild accusations on me. I will request you please read the relevant sections on this page to give an inside in this user and to understand who is incivil. Please read the texts like these [1], [2], [3]. The Bodggaya beggar image is more appropriate than others because:

  • You may know, many beggars live a condition like this, many of them have various disabilities.

There is no "typical" definition of poverty, or beggar. There are abled beggar, disabled beggar. The purpose of the article is depicting poverty. The other beggar images which this user want to place deleting the Bodhgaya beggar image are not good quality, one is B&W, and the other depicting a beggar girl in Ladakh. But my objection here is that Ladakh is quite different from rest of the country because of its geographics. Majority Indians live in plain. And this Bodhgaya beggar image is showing poverty at its most extreme level. It is not right to conceal the situation of poor men like this, it is the truth, the reality. This image touches the heart of the reader, which is a real situation. Yes not all beggars are disabled, but is this an argument? On the other hand it also can be said that not all beggars are abled. Our job here is not to understand who is abled, or who is not. But to find a good image which is representative of many.

  • This user is repeatating his arguments and has taken a densive position by his ad hominem attack on me. This user has informed many partisan editors, like User:Hkelkar socks about the image. Any one do not agree with him, here I am trying to depict poverty, and he is labelling me as Indophobic. The only reason given against this image that "since all beggars have not messed up legs, this image is undue". But it is an anti-individualistic argument. So what if not all beggars do not have messed up legs? The fact is that such secenes is a reality and it would not be right to conceal it. Such scenes exists, it is the truth. If it is reality, if such scenes exits, then an article depicting poverty i.e. "the condition of lacking full economic access to fundamental human needs such as food, shelter and safe drinking water", only those images should remain which clearly illustrate this fact.
  • Please remember the article is not about India, but the article is about poverty. This article is not depicting India, depicting poverty in India. So such image is not deriding India, it is illustrating the poverty in India. Will it be right to conceal it? I am sympathetic to the poor. It is true their are abled beggars also, but such scenes does also exists. There are other images in the article which depict abled poor. This image will cover all the sides and will be very appropriate. I request you please look into the matter. Thanks and regards. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 08:00, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Re: Image:BUET_Bengal_Tigers.gif

Bhaia, I do agree that we cannot use this image :-(. I requested Shuman Bhaia (Shuman Kumar Nath) to send me an image representing all the members of BUET Bengal Tiger and he sent me this one. Actually it was my mistake that I didn't mention him to send me image from his personal collection. And I wasn't aware of its web presence as well. Please take necessary step to remove this copy. In the mean time I will request Shuman Bhaia once again to send me an image from his personal collection. It would be really nice if you also take an initiative to collect few free-image for this article. Regards, -- Niaz(Talk • Contribs) 11:57, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Message from Murad Kahn

please STOP distorting true facts. whatever was written on Taher until January is partially correct only. I do not know by who has been doing so, but using unfounded and unestablished records with noncredible resources will only undermine wikipedias validity. Yes, I completely agree, Bangladesh Independence history has been as heavily jaded a fact as the clouds in the atmosphere, due to numerous outside and political interference and ifluences, but if you write to or contact the gazetted resources that have been published instead of relying on storybooks and magazine articles you will not find one untrue sentence. What ever are being written are just "THE FACTS". Not Opinions.

For Eg: Taher took his battalion to Dhaka - First of all Sector 11 never reached Dhaka in 1971. FYI "All Sectors Commanders w/their FF's including Gen.Osmany was barred to enter Dhaka from Dec 05 1971". Even the conspirators are going to laugh at this. They were not allowed to attend the ceremony. Neither Head of State nor Chiefs of either Army were allowed to confer upon or sign the surrender declaration. Surrender document was signed by two eastern command chiefs. For this fact to be true Taher being injured on Nov 2nd 71 and no left leg, must have flown over a month and a half later and must have been specially airdropped handicapped by the indian army to have joined Sq.Ldr. Hamidullah Khan and his troops at Tangail, where they were camped out for a week...and witnessed... Then another can of worms open up. Kader Siddiqi's mass murder and land grabbing.....

No.2 Taher never enrolled to any course at any school after MC Coll, Sylhet. You must read Tahers OWN Hand Written Deposition in 1972 at the Ministry of Defence and Army QMG.

No.3 How can Taher participate at Kamalpur battle on Nov 14. Kamalpur Battle never took place on Nove 14 first of all, and on Nov 14 Taher's was in Puna recovering with only one leg. Kamalpur battle was fought over for Four Times. which one are you referring to. The final Kamalpur Battle was held four hours away by river boat from where Taher was at the time. Taher was at Tura, BSF HQ. He was not even inducted the sector.

FYI - You can atleast contact Brig.Gen. Kler and Wing Commander Hamidullah. They both live in Los Angeles, CA. They get together a lot. It is imperitive that you get your facts straight. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 221.188.78.69 (talk) 19:33, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Third party references attest to Taher's participation in the battle. If you have any reliable sources (personal stories don't really count as RS), please provide them. --Ragib (talk) 19:37, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Are you blind or unable to read. I have attested more than three resources. And if you really know how then here they are once again Ministry of Defense Gazette Notification No.8/25/D-1/72-1378, Dated 15 December 1973; Sector Documents/1971/No.11 Sector/Liberation War, Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, BD/Nov 2004; Bangladesh Army, Personnel Services Directorate - Records Office; Quarterdeck - Directorate Ex- Servicemen's Affairs, Army HQ, New Delhi, 1976;

And who are your three attested references if may ask kindly?! And please don't refer to those story articles as "attested". If National Gazette Publications are "Untrue" and "Lieutenant Colonel Taher's Self-Depositions to the Ministries of Establishment, Defence, and the Bangladesh Army" are not official enough for you then I must point out SADLY, that you are DISTORTING FACTS!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 221.188.78.69 (talk) 19:56, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Please do not launch personal attacks. I have provided several links from scholarly research papers, books etc. All of these are verifiable. Interestingly, your references are very conveniently unavailable to other editors :). Most of these also lack page numbers ... do you even have them? In any case, we have to provide all referenced information. --Ragib (talk) 20:00, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
By the way, you blanked my references, and blanked large sections of the article too. That's plain and simple vandalism. You've been warned, --Ragib (talk) 20:01, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

I do not mean these to be personal attacks. If they came across as such please accept my heartfelt apologies. I personally have nothing against you or no one else. Verifiable Truths or Verifiable Lies is the clean cut and dry question here. Whatever is written has to make sense also in the least like "Taher's participation in battle on Nov 14th". Just because some people are feeding verifiable sources[what are you criterias for establishing facts as (VERIFIABLE) first of all is seriously questionable], regardless they are true or untrue, makes sense or not, is it Wikipedia's policy to allow it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 221.188.78.69 (talk) 20:10, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Blanking your references was a technical glitch on my part. Apologies. I should warn you in turn on spreading lies and twisting facts that makes little sense willfully and playing the blame game on others. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 221.188.78.69 (talk) 20:14, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Cool. My warning to you is based on the following policies: WP:V, WP:NPA, WP:RS. I had posted some peer-reviewer scholarly work. --Ragib (talk) 20:18, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

You very well know whatever had been provided makes full sense and are true including references. You are picking resources and qoutes like picking fruit salad. Shame on you and your ill-conceived efforts Mr.Ragib. They will not prevail, I assure you. Good luck with your choices - By Muraad Kahn —Preceding unsigned comment added by 221.188.78.69 (talk) 20:59, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

No, I'm merely reporting what the overwhelming majority of sources say about Taher's role. I assume you have a Conflict of interest here, given your efforts to promote your father's role over Taher's. But we need to stick to verifiability rather than personal reasons, and that's why I'm citing these established sources. --Ragib (talk) 22:33, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
It is much better to post article specific discussions like this in the article talk page - thereby at least readers who are reading the article could check the discussion page for any potential issues regarding the article. Mr. Muraad, please don't attack others personally, if you have legitimate verifiable documents, those materials will be added to the article - just provide the sources in a way that others can verify them. Just to let all reader's know that since as I am guilty of committing heinious violations under the Wiki Constitution on Ragib's page, I have taken off the random off the street personal opinions that "I had inserted without any valid verifiable resources"- according to Ragib. Unless Ragib chooses to keep them, of which there are evidence a plenty. He keeps what he likes and erases what he does not approve even though they are in the same sentences from the exact same resource. Ain't that true Ragib, I just cannot wait for your denial. I sincerely apologise to all readers including Wikipedia and yourself, for whatever trouble I may have caused. Hope you have a nice Wikiholiday Mr.Ragib. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 222.146.105.210 (talk) 10:09, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Just for the record Mr.Ragib, Taher or Hamidullah - Neither of these men are my fathers. It was a sweet pinch though! And all readers are more than welcome to read my arguments as attacks - that is their freedom of choice. I would like to further point out clearly Verbal or Written quarrels are not attacks.

Please note that I have been trying to add the external link www.21stfebruary.org for two topics, 1- International Mother Language Day 2- Bengali Language Movement

This above site is specifically made on the aforesaid topics and contains rare historical pictures, documents and details of the events which have been collected directly from the historians, photographars of the Language Movement of 1952. This is not a commercial site and probably contains more information/pictures on this event than any other site in the internet. Please feel free to check for yourself.

Note: 21st February 1952 is a historic day for Bengali Language Movement and its recognition is evident from UNESCO's Declaration of the day as Int' Mother Language Day and as such the aforesaid site relates to both topics. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ihmsaw (talkcontribs) 17:21, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Please reply

So ragib,

U r finally back to wiki. How s ur research going on? Would you please tell me one thing. Do all the US universities ask for a GPA 3 out of 4 from under-graduate study-life if someone wants to do a MS/PhD from there? since mine was below 3 (2.67), do i have a chance to study in United states? Though i am yet to appear for GRE/Toefl (I will sit for those in mid-2008). I am keeping an eye on the univs having rank after 40 or so.

Please ragib, share your views. If you can give me your gmail id that would have been great. --Jayanta (Talk) 12:28, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi, the article which you prod-ed was previously tagged, and had the tag removed [4]. There is therefore a possibility that deletion may be contested. If you want it deleted, I suggest bringing it through the AFD process for full review. Sjakkalle (Check!) 12:13, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

speedies

Some advice: when you put a speedy tag on an article, make sure you use an edit summary contain the word speedy, or db- . it helps the admins find it in the edit history. And please never use the word "vanity"--people see it as an insult. Find a synonym. Non-notable is a good choice instead. DGG (talk) 15:39, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
