iOS request
[edit]At our meeting on Saturday, we discussed photo documentation of buildings. Since there was very positive feedback for doing this, would you be interested in writing the Unvisited app for iOS? Kevin Rutherford (talk) 00:46, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
- Yes I would. I've gotten a lot of requests for an iphone/ipad version. I've got a development environment all set up for ios, and have done a couple of simple apps. The toughest thing about ios, is that apple has to approve the app. Faolin42 (talk) 01:23, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
- Is there anything that we need to do in terms help, or will it just take time? Kevin Rutherford (talk) 23:26, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
- Just time, as far as the coding goes. I'm guessing it'll take about a month to have a beta version available for iOS devices. But a couple of things that might help are... 1) Suggestions for a better name for the App, if anyone thinks it's necessary. I have mixed feelings about the name 'Unvisited'. Nice in a way, but misleading. 2) Suggestions on how the user interface could be improved. 3) Suggestions on missing features (if any). For 2 and 3, someone would need to use the Android version. No guarantee I would take the suggestions, but they would be nice to have. I've implemented about half the suggestions I've gotten so far. Faolin42 (talk) 23:33, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
- At first, I thought, "Oh, the Places to Go," but then I realized that wouldn't fit. Maybe "Go to It!" or, "On the Go," would be good starts, since they imply the purpose of the app, and are short enough to fit. Lpgeffen might also be interested in this, as he is a photographer who came to our last meeting. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 04:32, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
- Not only a photographer but a software engineer and professional beta tester. Please keep me informed! Paul (User:Lpgeffen) (talk) 02:17, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
- There's an android version of the app already available at Unvisited. If you have an android device it would be useful to me to get some feedback on the android version before I port it to iOS. See points 1,2,3 above. Faolin42 (talk) 03:09, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Do you happen to have an update on iOS development? Kevin Rutherford (talk) 23:06, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
- I'm actively working on it (a little bit at a time). Today I was working on the layout part so it would automatically adjust for different devices and orientations. In keeping with Apple's design philosophy, it'll be stripped down to the essentials. Not as many settings/help screens/bells and whistles as the Android version. I think I'll stick with the name Unvisited. I like the name in German "Nicht Besucht". Or the Italian "Deserto". I'm pretty sure I can make a version available for beta testing next week. I'll try to post some screen shots this weekend. Faolin42 (talk) 00:18, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
- Oh, that's great! I know I would love to do a photo documentation session this summer with the Boston folk if possible, so having this would certainly make things easier. Also, if you're going to be down on the Cape before July 4th, Harwich High School is scheduled to be demolished shortly after that date, so if I don't get a photo of it before then, it might not be a bad idea to target this in a sweep. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 14:58, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
- Got some preliminary screens for the iOS version of Unvisited. Still many details to implement. Faolin42 (talk) 01:58, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
- Wow, those look great, and I cannot wait to use that in the future! If it is ready, I will be going to Berlin tomorrow, so I would love to use the beta app if it is available then. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 17:30, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- The odds are slim, but we could give it a shot. How long will you be in Berlin, and will you have a Mac with you or access to a Mac? The standard Apple ad-hoc testing depends on the testers having a Mac in addition to the iPad/iPhone. Anyway, the first thing I would need is your iPad/iPhone device name and device id (Also known as UDID or identifier) On my iPad the device name is "John's iPad" and the id is a 40 digit hex number. If you have a Mac you can connect the iPad/iPhone to, the instructions are at apple.com/MaintainingProfiles in the section titled "Locating iOS Device IDs Using iTunes". You can email the info to faolin42@ymail.com. Faolin42 (talk) 18:57, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- It would probably be good to know your iOs version. That's on the same screen as the device name and id. For instance my version is 7.1. Faolin42 (talk) Faolin42 (talk) 21:15, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- I'll be here until Monday, but I do not have a Mac to connect right now. I am sure others do at the conference, so I would have no problem doing that later today. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 02:34, 11 April 2014 (UTC)
- I think I've figured out how to deliver a beta version. Once I get your iPhone/iPad name and id, I can add it to the testing profile, and email you an Unvisited.ipa file to install from the Mac to your iPad/iPhone. But don't go out of your way to do it. I generated trips in Berlin from the Android version (see User:Faolin42/Berlin), and there's not that many places in en:wp that need to be photographed. There's probably a lot more back home. Adrianne Wadewitz was a feminist scholar of 18th-Century British literature, and a prolific editor of the site. As part of a worldwide series of tributes, New England Wikimedians, in conjunction with local institutions of higher learning, have created three edit-a-thons that will be occurring in May and June. The events are as follows:

Name preference
[edit]I'm adding some names to images, e.g. File:2014 WikiConference USA (Group B) 27.JPG
It occurred to me that some people might prefer their real name, some might prefer their user name. Do you have a preference?
Can you recall the name of the person on the right? I know I heard it, but I did not retain it.--S Philbrick(Talk) 16:32, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- I actually prefer my real name, John Phelan. On the right was User:Slowking4 according to the conference schedule. Faolin42 (talk) 16:40, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- And thanks for doing this, by the way! Faolin42 (talk) 16:44, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- Updated, thanks.--S Philbrick(Talk) 17:54, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Announcing: NRHP Fall Photo Contest!
[edit]The WP:NRHP Fall 2014 Photo Contest will kick off at midnight eastern time on Monday September 1! This is an opportunity for all folks with a camera (or a sketchpad and scanner, doncha know) and an interest in the National Register of Historic Places to just have some low-key fun and maybe get some barnstars. Come submit some photos or pose a challenge to your fellow editors. And maybe, just maybe, along the line we'll improve the encyclopedia... (Note that while this contest is intentionally concurrent with Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 and the Wikipedia Summer of Monuments, there ain't gonna be no cash prizes or press releases here. But compete in 'em all if you like - we won't be jealous.) — Ipoellet (talk) 22:55, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

[edit]Hello. I'm sorry to bother you on your talk page, but I was wondering if you might have any photos of the interior of the Federal Building in Laconia, N.H. Specifically, I'm looking for a photo of the mural(s) painted by Philip Guston and Musa McKim as part of a Section of Fine Arts initiative in 1941. Conflict of Interest guideline
[edit]Thanks for coming to WP:COIN for help with your COI question. The following text is pro-forma and doesn't indicate that you have done anything wrong. But please read it.
Hello, Faolin42. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you have an external relationship with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.
All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.
If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:
- Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
- Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
- Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.
Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies. Note that Wikipedia's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.

Unvisited broken?
[edit]Hi there!
I tried preparing a few walking trips in advance of a visit to Ukraine, but no suggestions were returned, and the app said it was retrying the query a number of times.
That seems to me like an API compatibility problem. Could it be Unvisited was not updated following one of the breaking changes to the API?
I'd have happily looked into the code and offered a patch myself, but I don't see a link to the source code.
Any help appreciated, and thanks for Unvisited! I love it! Asaf (WMF) (talk) 20:26, 16 May 2016 (UTC) Asaf (WMF) (talk) 20:26, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Thank you
[edit]Thanks for documenting (in your user space) some of the merging of Middle-earth articles that has been going on. The WikiProject is not really active any more, but might it be possible to put a copy of what you are doing there? There might also be some useful history at the quality statistics page, where it is possible to see how the number of redirects and so on varies over time. Carcharoth (talk) 10:40, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks! I've been wrestling with how to present it. Having so many Middle-earth articles on Wikipedia was one of the things that initially attracted me to Wikipedia. Mostly, I took the list of articles I had - from years ago - and split them out by what has happened to them in the last six years. I need to add an additional section for notable (to me) deleted articles. Faolin42 (talk) 20:20, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

Overlinking
[edit]I've noticed you're linking a lot of common words in articles. This is generally frowned upon as "overlinking", it creates a visual mess and the links are not always helpful. I'd suggest slowing down and picking your links more specifically. — The Hand That Feeds You:Bite 22:36, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yep, I was worried about overlinking. I was trying to restrict linking to pages that had a fewer than average number of links already. Lately I've been linking to emotional/hot button terms, like 'political correctness', 'revenge', 'execution', 'death threats', 'neo-Nazi', 'Hitler', 'white supremacist', 'fascist', 'troll' 'satan', etc... I will stop the linking to these common words. Faolin42 (talk) 23:22, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
