Your view sought on an article for deletion

[edit]

I created a page about a once famous children's author who will be fondly remembered by those now in their late 20s/early 30s. It has been recommended for deletion by someone who seems very keen on quick editing.

I would welcome your view.

The page is Brian Paterson. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tomintoul (talkcontribs) 08:51, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Thanks!! I didn't have any eye-of-newt or bat's blood, and didn't know the correct incantations.
However, it seems that you do. But not only that, you actually got off of your bottom and used them!
Serious "thank you"s, and thank you for the example of how to deal with this sort of situation in the future. If you in intend standing for public office, you've won my vote. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 13:47, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not make statements attacking people or groups of people. Wikipedia has a strict policy against personal attacks. Attack pages and images are not tolerated by Wikipedia and are speedily deleted. Users who continue to create or repost such pages and images in violation of our biographies of living persons policy will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Thank you.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. gz33 (talk) 09:11, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • The article was vandalized by another editor. In such a case, it is better to restore the last non-vandalized version than to seek the deletion of the vandalized version. I see that another editor has declined the speedy nomination. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 16:14, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article Tri-Creek School Corporation has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This article does not meet the notability guidelines for companies and organizations.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Bigvernie (talk) 19:07, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jaipur Bus

[edit]

Jaipur Bus, or the article it was a redirect to, was deleted because it was created by a sockpuppet. I didn't see the article before it was deleted, but I suspect that the topic is notable on the basis of coverage in reliable sources such as http://www.indianexpress.com/news/yearaftergreensignal-jaipursbusprojec/211963/ and http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/jaipur/Tech-upgrade-for-city-bus-services/articleshow/5814091.cms Eastmain (talkcontribs) 20:53, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

G'day Eastmain - Jaipur Bus was deleted as a broken redirect. The original was Jaipur Bus (Jaipur BRTS), which as you say was deleted as it was created by a sockpuppet. The sockmaster was blocked for repeat cut-aste copyright violations so the deleted article (which is only one paragraph) is unsafe. It probably is a notable topic but it'll have to be recreated from scratch. --Mkativerata (talk) 21:01, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello Eastmain! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot notifying you on behalf of the the unreferenced biographies team that 1 of the articles that you created is currently tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 46 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please take a look at my comments over there and weigh in on them. The article got deleted as G11 after all, but the deleting admin left the talkpage in place. It's not as unsalvageable as I had thought, but it still needs work, and I generally don't touch medical articles with a 39 1/2 foot long pole, if you know what I mean. I dropped a note on the creator's page, hopefully this person wasn't driven away by it. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 20:03, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dhūti to Dhoti page re-direct

[edit]

Hello,

Happened to see that a re-direct for Dhūti to Dhoti was done by you here [2]. Dhūti is the name of one of the gods mentioned in the ancient Hindu Sanskrit scriptures. Dhoti is the word for traditional lower undergarment worn by a male in Hindi. So please revert the re-direct. I can help you create a page for Dhūti, will need some research beforehand.

Waiting to hear from you,

Warm regards,

Questionable Deletion Nomination

[edit]

I have been examining the Wikipedia entry for The Wisconsin Cheeseman. In good faith, I submitted a request for information on updating the entry, due to the company changing ownership. To my understanding, this is factual information pertinent to the accuracy of the entry. I fully acknowledge a possible COI, as I am a writer for the new ownership, charged with the duty of updating the entry itself. I was given a thorough response by editor Orange Mike outlining the parameters and cautions. At the time of my inquiry (almost exactly), a Speedy Deletion Nomination for The Wisconsin Cheeseman was submitted by editor Orange Mike. This was removed by yourself (Eastmain), which I appreciate. But I find the almost-immediate nomination for speedy deletion by editor Orange Mike very questionable. The Wisconsin Cheeseman is a 65-year-old national direct mail cataloger, making it one of the older such companies in the U.S. I will refrain from any opinion or promotional slant about the company itself. Facts alone will bear out what is true and accurate about the company. Knowing full well that a person wanted to update The Wisconsin Cheeseman entry with newer information—and supply more factual details to broaden the scope of the entry—sheds a very questionable light on editor Orange Mike's motivations for speedy deletion. For all the extensive discussion of neutrality on the Wikipedia site, I find his action and the reason given very suspect. With updated information, it is highly likely that the reason he posted for speedy deletion would be null and void. This incident causes me to seriously question the objectivity of enforcement at Wikipedia. Eliassonwriter (talk) 19:43, 6 September 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eliassonwriter (talkcontribs) 19:41, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Different editors can legitimately have different opinions about a particular article. Orangemike is a good editor, although I sometimes disagree with his decisions. The best way to avoid having a speedy deletion tag added to an article is to make sure that the notability of the topic is clearly established in the first version of the article. In many cases, it is safer to write the article offline and only create the article on Wikipedia once the article is complete. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 20:08, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your quick response, Eastmain. I will respect your observation and your regard of Orangemike, while I work to provide more factual details on The Wisconsin Cheeseman entry. Best regards.208.166.192.24 (talk) 20:24, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello, Eastmain, and thanks for contributing to Wikipedia!

I wanted to let you know that some editors are discussing at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jonxion whether the article Jonxion should be in Wikipedia. I encourage you to comment there if you think the article should be kept in the encyclopedia.

The deletion discussion doesn't mean you did something wrong. In fact, other editors may have useful suggestions on how you can continue editing and improving Jonxion, which I encourage you to do. If you have any questions, feel free to ask at the Help Desk.

Thanks again for your contributions! MTLskyline (talk) 01:29, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

AfD and PROD notifications

[edit]

Hi Eastmain,

Back in November, you got either an AfD or PROD notification, which was part of the template testing project's experiments. If you could go here and leave us some feedback about what you think about the new versions of the templates we tested (there are links to the templates), that would be very useful. (You can also email me at mpinchuk@wikimedia.org if you want.) Thanks! Maryana (WMF) (talk) 23:50, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough about the history section being public domain, but the rest of the text is also copied - mainly from the references given at the bottom. I could remove all of this and leave the history but that would give an article about the court which stops abruptly in 1880s. Any suggestions? Polequant (talk) 13:28, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Not an option for me when I know nothing about the subject unfortunately. If you want to try then go ahead. In the meantime I will remove those sections and leave a note for the original editor. Polequant (talk) 14:38, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Can you please take another look at Airtel Africa? As I noted on the talk page, there are multiple sources that the article is copying from. Thanks, GabrielF (talk) 04:30, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • I rewrote the sections that appeared to be copyvios. If any other copyvios are detected, please remove the problem text. This is a notable company, so I would prefer to fix the article rather than delete it. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 05:14, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • Every part of the article that I've examined has copyvios. Here are the first few paragraphs of the History section:
      • The offer was for $10.7 billion. The deal would provide Bharti access to 15 more countries in the region, adding around 40.1 million subscribers to its already 125 million-plus user base. The combined revenue of the two entities would be around $12 billion.
      • The deal ran into hurdles after the government of Gabon had come out against the deal, but later approved the sale. The government of Congo Republic had also said Bharti-Zain deal broke law. There was also a dispute about minority ownership of Zain's operations in Nigeria, the biggest market in the deal. Minority shareholder Econet was seeking to overturn a 2006 deal by Zain - then called Celtel - in which it bought a majority stake in Nigerian mobile operator Vee Networks Ltd, now Zain Nigeria. On 8, June 2010, Bharti said the Nigeria ownership dispute had been settled.
    • Here is an Indian Express article:
      • The deal would provide Bharti access to 15 more countries in the region, adding around 40.1 million subscribers to its already 125 million-plus user base. With Bharti having presence in five overseas markets post the deal, it would increase its global presence across 20 regions. The combined revenue of the two entities would be around $12 billion.[3]
    • And here is a Reuters article:
      • The deal had run into hurdles after the government of the small central African nation of Gabon had come out against the deal, but later approved the sale. The government of Congo Republic had also said that the Bharti-Zain deal broke the law. There was also a dispute about minority ownership of Zain's operations in Nigeria, the biggest market in the deal. Minority shareholder Econet was seeking to overturn a 2006 deal by Zain -- then called Celtel -- in which it bought a majority stake in Nigerian mobile operator Vee Networks Ltd, now Zain Nigeria. On Tuesday, Bharti said the Nigeria ownership dispute had been settled.[4]
    • This is a well-established pattern for the article creator. See Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Mushroom9. He takes a few sentences from many sources and patches them together to create an article. I would be very surprised if there were more than a few sentences that could stand up to scrutiny here. I've identified six different sources that he's copied from - do you really think its necessary to look for more?GabrielF (talk) 05:40, 10 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy Deletion, Fred Nassiri

[edit]

Eastmain, you state there appears to be "notability?" When did "notability" at Wiki become defined as some rich guy purchasing photo ops with a bunch of dignitaries? That seems to be "notability" by association, purchased per photo, not any kind of inherent "notability" on the part of the listed person. Now if this were the wild son of a famous actor who gets in frequent bar fights, then yes, maybe that is a form of "notability" by association. But such is not the case here.

Why don't you place the name in a YouTube Search and you will find number of viewers averages between 100 and 1000 for the majority of the videos. Does that kind of audience suggest "notability?" I've seen unknown 13 year old kids with YouTube videos about their dog get far larger YouTube audience numbers. I believe you need to bring in at least three other administrators to vote on this matter, or I might be tempted to question your own NPOV on this issue. By allowing this kind of listing, it makes a mockery of the rationale used to delete thousands of other Wiki listings Dubious Assertions 2 (talk) 19:37, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Page Curation newsletter - closing up!

[edit]

Hey all :).

We're (very shortly) closing down this development cycle for Page Curation. It's genuinely been a pleasure to talk with you all and build software that is so close to my own heart, and also so effective. The current backlog is 9 days, and I've never seen it that low before.

However! Closing up shop does not mean not making any improvements. First-off, this is your last chance to give us a poke about unresolved bugs or report new ones on the talkpage. If something's going wrong, we want to know about it :). Second, we'll hopefully be taking another pass over the software next year. If you've got ideas for features Page Curation doesn't currently have, stick them here.

Again, it's been an honour. Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 12:31, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is not a newsletter

[edit]

This is just a tribute.

Anyway. You're getting this note because you've participated in discussion and/or asked for updates to either the Article Feedback Tool or Page Curation. This isn't about either of those things, I'm afraid ;p. We've recently started working on yet another project: Echo, a notifications system to augment the watchlist. There's not much information at the moment, because we're still working out the scope and the concepts, but if you're interested in further updates you can sign up here.

In addition, we'll be holding an office hours session at 21:00 UTC on Wednesday, 14 November in #wikimedia-office - hope to see you all there :). I appreciate it's an annoying time for non-Europeans: if you're interested in chatting about the project but can't make it, give me a shout and I can set up another session if there's enough interest in one particular timezone or a skype call if there isn't. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 10:55, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bryan Versteeg

[edit]

As you seem to be one of the good guys... Any ideas for saving Bryan Versteeg? Notability is the issue. Regards -Arb. (talk) 15:54, 22 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! The article was almost entirely taken from the website. Not exclusively from the page it was linked to (the timeline hadn't been updated to include 2012 entries for example) - but perusing the website with regards to each section showed substantial amounts of content were taken from their website. A little work from the ground up would be great though. Hope that allays your fears. PanydThe muffin is not subtle 16:08, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Reggio Children Foundation, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Reggio (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

The article Éric Fortier has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Par WP:BLP1E - The article details a singular event with no reason to assume that the subject will receive further coverage in the future.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I'm puzzled by your rationale for removing the speedy tag: " (removed {{Db-a3}}. Context is clear. Notability uncertain.)" A3 isn't "no context", it's "no content": "Any article (other than disambiguation pages, redirects, or soft redirects) consisting only of external links, category tags and "see also" sections, a rephrasing of the title,....". I reckon that if the title is "Wandoor Siva Temple" then an article consisting of "Wandoor Siva Temple is a temple located at Wandoor in India" is a rephrasing of the title.

Actually it's now got a ref (of sorts), which does move it past the bar. But I think you might be confusing A1 and A3 in your explanation! PamD 22:49, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
