Re: Amazon settlement

[edit]

On ecosystem alteration:

The influence of human alteration has been generally underestimated, reports Darna L. Dufour: “Much of what has been considered natural forest in Amazonia is probably the result of hundreds of years of human use and management.” “Use of Tropical Rainforests by Native Amazonians,” BioScience 40, no. 9 (October 1990):658. For an example of how such peoples integrated planting into their nomadic lifestyles, see Rival, Laura, 1993. "The Growth of Family Trees: Understanding Huaorani Perceptions of the Forest," Man 28(4):635-652.

I'm adding it as a note.

Re concentration on the Atlantic:

It's perhaps sloppy to say they were concentrated; more accurate to say that a number of native peoples with higher density settlement (not necessarily hunter-gatherers, or mixing h-g'ing with other lifestyles) lived on the coast and other peoples lived as hunter-gatherer-planters (see above) generally inland. I'll work on getting you a cite for this mix.

I'm also slightly restructuring.

hi

Hi. I found you in categories of users who can contribute in English and Portuguese. I myself am a native speaker of English, but I'm well on my way to learning Portuguese. Just check out my user page and talk page, and join in any of the discussions. To keep updated, you can even put a watch on my user page, which will automatically watch my talk page. :-) learnportuguese (talk) 19:08, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
