License tagging for Image:Brian raabe1998card2.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Brian raabe1998card2.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 21:04, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Iekessinger.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. No Guru 16:54, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there, the above article was tagged for speedy deletion as an implausible typo, and I deleted it as such. However, in looking through the history there is still a lot of content that got deleted with it, and I was wondering where this content should belong--if it was copy and pasted from somewhere, if you need it in your userspace, etc. Please reply either here or on my talk page. Thanks.

For your reference, the article began: "Chicago Browns/Pittsburgh Stogies|Chicago/Pittsburgh was a baseball team in the Union Association of 1884. The Chicago Browns disbanded on August 25 and became the Pittsburgh Stogies, which disbanded on September 19. Together, they won 41 games and lost 50, finishing sixth in the twelve-team league." Baseball card images

[edit]

Hi, you seem to be continuing to upload baseball cards and putting them into articles for the players. As said above, baseball cards do not qualify for fair use outside of commentary about the card. More information at WP:FU#Counterexamples, and in discussions at Wikipedia talk:Fair_use/Archive 2#Fair use of baseball cards images.

In general baseball cards do not fall under fair use because the copyright is still held by Topps, Fleer, Upper Deck, etc. Posting images of their cards would probably be considered to be in violation of their copyright. Older baseball card from the 1800's early part of the 20th century can sometimes be used as the images have fallen into the public domain because of their age.

I will start working on removing the incorrect copyright tags on the images and they will soon be deleted. However, if you continue to upload baseball card images, you will be blocked. Sorry, I read your response at User talk:No Guru, and I was way too harsh with you. I do think that policy is clear now at WP:FU#Counterexamples, point 6. I'm going to hold off and wait for a response from you. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 06:08, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with your point, but it does look like (from the counterexamples link I give) that policy has cleared up. However, I'm going to look further into things and see if we can get an explicit statement, policy-wise. Now, all I did was put notices on the last three images you uploaded and I'll stop. If you want, you can revert it back to the fairuse tag or just let things go. I don't want it to seem like I'm singling you out, so if unless it's clear, I'll just let it go. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 06:36, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hello BurmaShaver. Wikipedia policy, which is often quite conservative with respect to the law, only allows for the use of copyrighted works such as baseball cards, paintings, and magazine covers to be used as a part of critical commentary about that particular work or publication. The discussion at Wikipedia talk:Fair use lead to the addition of the explicit counterexample for baseball cards, so that there would be no misunderstanding. That discussion ended three months ago. If you disagree with the outcome, and have an argument to make, then you should start a new topic, challenging the guideline at Wikipedia talk:Fair use.
And yes, you are correct, there are many images throughout the encyclopedia that violate our fair use policy, including some baseball cards. The problem is so large that the process of cleaning them all up is going to take a long time, and unfortunately, in the meantime, these images set a very bad example and inspire imitation. Preventing the influx of new violations, such as your cards, which are being used solely as portraits for the men in the photographs, is equally important to cleaning up the existing instances. There is no favoritism involved.
Like I said, I encourage you to take this conversation to a central location, such as WP:FU, but if you need to respond to me personally, please do so here, so that this conversation does not become spread to a fourth talk page. Regards. ×Meegs 12:41, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
According to WP:POLICY, "a guideline is something that is: (1) actionable and (2) authorized by consensus." WP:FU is a guideline. If you do not choose to follow Wikipedia guidelines, others may bring your contributions into compliance, including deleting the images that you have uploaded. Copyright is not an issue to take likely, and a consensus of editors have devised these guidelines to protect the Wikimedia Foundation from legal threat. If you disagree with the guidelines, then you should begin the process of having them changed. If you are unsure about whether your contributions conform to the guidelines, then you should ask other users at a central location. In either case, as I suggested before, you should open a new discussion at Wikipedia talk:Fair use.
As I asked before, if you need to respond to me personally, please do so here (on this page), so that this conversation does not become spread to yet another talk page. I encourage you to go straight to Wikipedia talk:Fair use, though, instead of continuing to argue with individual editors. Regards. ×Meegs 23:35, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:00don mcmahon autograph.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:00don mcmahon autograph.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Quadell (talk) (random) 19:32, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Putting "passed away" in baseball bios

[edit]

I just wanted to let you know that it's pretty informal and fairly non-npov to say that someone has "passed away" instead of "died" for someone's death. Saying someone "passed away" takes the formalness out of the encyclopedia entry and also creates a non-npov statement, in that it implies that someone has went to heaven, or that there is an afterlife. Just keep that in mind when you create articles on notable baseball players and I will assist in changing "passed away" to "died" on your articles to help the process. Just look at all the major biographies, and not one of them says that the subject had "passed away". 68.79.132.216 04:32, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Baseball entries

[edit]

First off I'd like to thank you for your contributions to the pages of baseball players - it seems like you have worked hard on creating an number of new articles. However, I have an issue with the inclusion of some of your "trivia" on a number of players' pages. For instance, on Frank Lary's page, you wrote that he was the first strikeout victim of Cleveland Indians right-hander Russ Heman. {Cleveland Stadium -- April 20, 1961}. On Elton Chamberlain's page you wrote that He was the starting pitcher in the only game that his teammate Bob Mathews ever got into. {Athletic Park -- September 25, 1891}. Do you think this information is important enough to warrant inclusion on each of these player's entries? I removed both of the sentences because I feel that this trivia is too trivial. If either Russ Heman or Bob Mathews was a notable athlete (or notable at anything) I wouldn't have a problem with it. Please reply to let me know your opinions on this issue, however if you agree with my position I ask that you refrain from adding non-notable "trivia". Thanks, Mattingly23 01:39, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply on my talk page. To answer your question, I feel that the above examples detract from the quality of the articles. I'm not against trivia completely - however, I feel that it's better form to incorporate information directly into an article rather than having a specific 'trivia' section. I made a number of changes to Elton Chamberlain - notice how now there is no trivia section, but his nickname and the fact that he was ambidextrous are both included a little more gracefully. This is a matter of opinion, but I would recommend trying to incorporate any trivia without using a trivia section, although I understand that sometimes this can be difficult. - Mattingly23 04:30, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Joe morgan 1967.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. Major league debut

[edit]

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Major league debut, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. No offense but I don't see much that can be done with this article. BPMullins | Talk 01:22, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Buckshot May "prod"ded

[edit]

A {{prod}} template has been added to the article Buckshot May, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Orphaned non-free image (Image:Dick stuart 59topps-357.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Dick stuart 59topps-357.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 18:57, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Iepagan.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Iepagan.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 10:25, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Joe_niekro_autograph.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.

Speedy deletion of Image:Iereuschel.jpg

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Image:Iereuschel.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I5 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image which is not under a free license or in the public domain and it has not been used in any article for more than seven days.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[Talk:Image:Iereuschel.jpg|the article's talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Iesadecki.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Iesadecki.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Vic power autograph.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Vic power autograph.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 02:27, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Tony la russa64topps-244.jpg.

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 07:10, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello BurmaShaver! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 4 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 1 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

  1. Mike de la Hoz - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL
  2. Elvio Jiménez - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Bo belinsky 64topps-315.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Bo belinsky 64topps-315.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:04, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Harvey kuenn64topps-242.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Harvey kuenn64topps-242.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:20, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
