  • The Merge gadget has been updated. It is now faster and only one edit per merge is performed.

• Development
  • Continued with the implementation of redirects. There are a lot of corner cases to work out...
  • Created new data value handlers for quantities and geo coordinates, bringing queries closer
  • Moved browser tests to a new repository at https://github.com/wmde/WikidataBrowserTests to make the main Wikibase repo smaller and cleaner
  • Fixed a bunch of issues with the monobook skin
  • Made some more jQuery 1.9 compatibility fixes
  • More cleanup for the coming switch to WikibaseDataModel 1.0.
  • Icinga Dispatch Lag monitoring scripts, including IRC notifier bot, have been tested and are ready for Ops implementation. This should give us quicker notifications in case the notifications to Wikipedia and co about changes on Wikidata are slow again.

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July

I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. If you would like to sign up for the picnic, you can do so here. When signing up, say what you’re going to bring!

July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.

What else is going on in July? We have the American Chemical Society Edit-a-Thon on Saturday, July 12, dedicated to notable chemists, and our monthly WikiSalon on Wednesday, July 16.

Requesting an image in Washington DC

I'm requesting images of the Great Hall of the National Academy of Sciences (not the zillion golden images found on Google Image search) but of the interior wall on which a lot of scientific motifs have been painted such as Keeling Curve, Darwin's finches, the double helix of DNA, and many others. Can you oblige?

Battle of Fort Stevens Edit-a-Thon!

  • Finished a large number of new features and got them ready for roll-out. More in this email.
  • Wikibase made a big step forward to finally switch to DataModel 1.0.
  • Improved support for entity IDs bigger than 2 billion (32 bit integer).
  • We had to adapt Wikibase to some major changes (more major than usual, partly caused by discussions at Wikimania) in MediaWiki core: The default Vector skin became it’s own component and the ResourceLoader got some small but important updates.
  • Continued work on refactoring code of the user interface to make it ready for new design
  • Wrote a script to get number of users having wikidata in their recent changes/watchlist from the database

  • It will be possible to show the badges like "Featured Article" stored on Wikidata in the sidebar of the clients (Wikipedia, Wikisource, ...) starting Tuesday. Wikipedia will follow on Thursday.
  • Starting Tuesday we will deploy a new beta feature on the clients. It will allow you to show links to other sister projects in the sidebar based on the links in Wikidata.

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

Map

Hi. I want to add a map to the Mount Vernon Triangle article I'm working on and File:Dupontmap.png is a good example. I'm not familiar with Open Street Map. Is it something easy to learn or rather technical? (sadly I'm not blessed in the technical skills department) APK whisper in my ear 17:48, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

that map is quite outdated :/ and probably would do it differently today. I would take a look at tilemill [1], which I think comes with some sample / starter styles and is fairly easy to use. Museum hacks and museum edits

Hello there!

Upcoming events:

• February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
• February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
• February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".

I am also pleased to announce events for Wikimedia DC Black History Month with Howard University and NPR. Details on those events soon.

Wikimedia DC celebrates Black History Month, and more!

Hello again!

Not even a week ago I sent out a message talking about upcoming events in DC. Guess what? There are more events coming up in February.

First, as a reminder, there is a WikiSalon on February 11 (RSVP here or just show up) and Wiki Loves Small Museums at the Small Museum Association Conference on February 15 (more information here).

Now, I am very pleased to announce:

• Tuesday, February 17 from 10 AM to 3 PM there will be #WikiTurgy at the University of Maryland. Join fellow theatre enthusiasts for a “mass act of public dramaturgy!”
• Thursday, February 19 from 10 AM to 4 PM we are hosting the Howard University Black History Edit-a-Thon. We are working in partnership with the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of African-American and African diasporic history.
• Tuesday, February 24 from 6 PM to 8 PM we have the Black History Month “First Edit” at NPR. Help improve Wikipedia and help others make their first edit to Wikipedia!
• Finally, our monthly dinner meetup is on Saturday, February 28.

There is going to be a lot going on, and I hope you can come to some of the events!

You are invited to join us at Barnard College for Wikipedia Day NYC 2015, a Wikipedia celebration and mini-conference for the project's 14th birthday. In addition to the party, the event will be a participatory unconference, with plenary panels, lightning talks, and of course open space sessions. We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects. So if an item has labels in many languages but no sitelinks like "male" and "female" it will still show up high in the suggestions. (phabricator:T94404)
  • Discussed how to move forward with identifiers. Outcome: They should get their own datatype. (phabricator:T95287)
  • Implemented arbitrary access for the {{#property:…}} parser function. This can be invoked on the wikis that have arbitrary access enabled by using {{#property:P123|from=Q42}}. So far this is only Wikidata itself.
  • Did further performance work on the client (Wikipedia and co) in preparation for arbitrary access
  • Improved the performance of wbgetentities significantly when loading a large number of entities
  • Wrote more browser tests for different datavalues
  • Further work on RDF mapping and dumps
  • Fixed in other language box showing old data (phabricator:T90893)
  • Fixed language fallback on Special:Recent changes and Special:Contributions

Banff National Park

Hi Aude! I know based on what you have told me as well as a cursory glance at your editing history that you are only semi active on the en.wiki side of things. However, I suspect Banff National Park may be going to FAR soon unless we can summon the time and courage to get it back up to the highest level, ie: preventative medicine. I'm extremely sidetracked myself and already busy on another article trying to do the same...and working 60 hour weeks at my job. Hello from the team at Featured article review!

We are preparing to take a closer look at Featured articles promoted in 2004–2010 that may need a review. We started with a script-compiled list of older FAs that have not had a recent formal review. The next step is to prune the list by removing articles that are still actively maintained, up-to-date, and believed to meet current standards. We know that many of you personally maintain articles that you nominated, so we'd appreciate your help in winnowing the list where appropriate.

Please take a look at the sandbox list, check over the FAs listed by your name, and indicate on the sandbox talk page your assessment of their current status. Likewise, if you have taken on the maintenance of any listed FAs that were originally nominated by a departed editor, please indicate their status. BLPs should be given especially careful consideration.

• • State of the Map US (OpenStreetMap's conference) in New York on 6-8 June
  • Wikimedia Hackathon 2015 in Lyon from 23-25 May. Some of the activities and outcomes:
    • Wikidata descriptions can be soon be edited in the Wikipedia iOS app.
    • A early preview of the official SPARQL endpoint for Wikidata has been created to query Wikidata. Remember that it is not stable and still beta. A short introduction to SPARQL can be found in Lucie's slides.
    • If you are not familiar with SPARQL yet, a tool has been created by Tpt and Bene* to generate SPARQL queries from natural language questions.
    • To do SPARQL queries from the command line, a command line tool was crafted by Marius.

    • We got a cool presentation by Maxime about inventaire.io.

  • The Content Translation tool now automatically connects translated articles to Wikidata. (Thanks Content Translation developers!) Previously translated but unconnected articles have been connected by a bot. (Thanks Amir!)
  • Code review of the extensions written by a team of students to improve the constraint reports and make it possible to automatically check our data against other databases. A first version will go live soon pending further codereview and fixes.
  • Two new methods have been added to the lua library provided by Wikibase: wikibase.resolvePropertyId and wikibase.entity:getBestStatements.
  • Further work on making unserializable values editable in the UI (This can happen for example if a property is deleted.)
  • Made the Wikidata JSON dumps available on Labs in the standard dumps location there (/public/dumps).

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our evening "WikiWednesday" salon and knowledge-sharing workshop by 14th Street / Union Square in Manhattan. This month will also feature on a review of past and upcoming editathons, including Black Lunch Table Editathon @ MoMA on July 13. We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.   • Fixed property label on item pages not scrolling anymore (phabricator:T94588)
  • More work on getting the Wikibase Quality extensions ready for release. The part doing constraint violation checks should go to test.wikidata.org next week. The part doing checks against 3rd party databases will still take a bit longer but is also shaping up nicely.
  • Made it possible to create items even when another user is mass-creating items (phabricator:T103796)
  • Bene* worked more on making Wikidata work nicely on mobile

  • Added the property ID to Special:ListProperties
  • Moved two extensions (Wikidata.org and WikimediaBadges) from Github to Gerrit. More will follow.

  • Soon the edit summary for edits through the API will also contain the automatic edit summary that you are used to for edits done through the website. The summary given by the API user will be appended to the automatic summary. (phabricator:T97247)
  • Addressed performance issues in usage tracking updates and had to delay the latest round of rollouts because of it
  • Fixed a bug where suggestions would show up twice in item and property selectors (phabricator:T109697)
  • Improved performance of the mw.wikibase.sitelink Lua method
  • More work done on Unit Selector widget
  • Started working on the ArticlePlaceholder extension
  • Made final changes so we can redirect mobile users to the mobile version by default
  • Evaluated the remaining steps to get the extension deployed that lets you do checks against 3rd party databases. Not much left it seems and we'll tackle that in one of the next sprints. Getting the new features deployed for the constraints checks will still take a bit longer.
  • More work on making the edit summaries in the watchlist on Wikipedia and co more meaningful

  • Paging and sorting has been added to Special:ListProperties and it now also shows the IDs of the properties
  • Worked more on making the edit summaries on the client more meaningful and readable
  • Introduced a limit of 250 different entities that can be used on a page in the client via arbitrary access. The limit does not apply to convenience functions in lua, such as mw.wikibase.label which use a TermLookup instead of loading a full entity to get labels. (phabricator:T93885)
