Interlingvaj ligiloj

Mi ĵus rimarkis ke vi tre okupiĝas pri la projekto krei centran interlingvan vikion. Tian ideon mi havas de la unuaj momentoj kiam mi ekpartoprenis en Vikipedio. Mi volonte helpus por ke ĝi ekrealiĝu kiel eble plej frue. Kiu estas la plej bona loko por antaŭenirigi la projekton ? Ĉu bugzilo ? Ĉu meta ? Ĉu wikitech-l ? Mi legas kaj komprenas la anglan, sed ne tiom bone regas ĝin ke mi sentas min komforta en ĝi : sekve mi volas fokusiĝi al la plej trafa loko. Kelkaj rimarkoj :

1. OmegaWiki certe estas pli interesa modelo ol wiktionary por krei tiun interlingvan projekton kun la konceptoj DefinedMeaning kaj Expression/Definition
2. reguloj estis proponitaj por nomado de paĝoj en la projekto; kelkaj el ili ŝajnis al mi saĝaj (latinaj nomoj por plantoj kaj animaloj, nomo de urboj kaj de personoj en ties lingvo, ...); sed en multaj kazoj estos malfacile trovi regulon : sekve kiel en OmegaWiki la paĝo estu trovebla sub ties unue kreita titolo. Tamen ĝi estu trovebla per nomo en iu ajn el la lingvoj en kiu ĝi jam ekzistas. Estas ebla konflikto ke iu lemno havu signifon en iu lingvo kaj tute alian en alia lingvo. Sekve al la lemno devus esti iel aldonita en kiu lingvo ĝi estas. En wiktionary tiaj lemnoj aperas sinsekve en la paĝo en ĉiu unuopa lingvo. En OmegaWiki ili estas apartaj "Expression" apartenantaj al difinta lingvo
3. estu maloprtune ke la nomo de la projekto estu tiom longa kaj specife angla kia "interlanguage", mallongigo estu preferebla kia "iwiki"

First of all, i must note that your Esperanto writing is absolutely beautiful: It proves that this language can be used for serious technical discussions and still be simple to read even for dilettantes like myself with a little help from ReVo and the Wikipedia article Esperanto vocabulary. Nevertheless, i shall reply in English now, because i've been writing in Catalan and Spanish a lot today, and their vocabulary is quite similar to that of Esperanto and i'm too tired now to resolve all this confusion in my head.

I noticed your supporting comment on the request to enable Nikola Smolenski's Interlanguage extension that i opened in Bugzilla. I was particularly happy to see your name there, because back in 2006 i noticed your platform at the board election - "True multilingualism and perspective". Even though i am very comfortable with writing and reading English, i strongly believe that Wikipedia should be more language-neutral. And, just like yourself, the links to other languages from articles was probably the first thing that i noticed in Wikipedia and i immediately thought that there is some "committee" that translates articles and maintains those links. There is no such committee, of course, and the current way of maintaining them is a nightmare.

Now, to your points. The Bugzilla request is open, but there are thousands of other open requests. Nikola's message about it on Wikitech-l went unanswered. It is rather frustrating, but i don't know how else can i promote it. You can try replying on Wikitech-l, and to bring up your suggestions above (in English, of course).

I tried using OmegaWiki a couple of times, but haven't got the hang of it yet. Now that you mentioned it, i'll take another look at it. I can say this: MediaWiki is OK for writing an encyclopedia, but it is very bad for writing a dictionary. The ideas in OmegaWiki appear to be much better, but they seem to be progressing slowly. I do, indeed, imagine, that ultimately, in a perfect world, the Wikimedia projects will turn into one amazing language-neutral reference database that will define all the meanings of all words (that's the universal dictionary), places, people and things (that's the universal 'pedia), and translate all books (that's Wikisource). Both OmegaWiki and Nikola's Interlanguage extension are positive steps in that direction. (A comment: I am close to completing a degree in Structural Linguistics, so i actually know what am i talking about... more or less :)

Your proposed rules for naming the pages are OK. I think that everyone will support accepted Latin taxonomy for articles about species, and probably WikiSpecies can be integrated into that. Unfortunately, i don't know anything about Biology to make any further comments, but this really shouldn't raise any controversy. Naming people in the language of their country of origin may be a bit controversial, even though it shouldn't - for example, is Pablo Casals Spanish or Catalan? (See the talk page of that article for the heated discussions about it.) Another example: Do you call the Ze'ev Jabotinsky interwiki article "זאב ז'בוטינסקי", because Israelis mostly know him as a Jewish political leader in British Palestine or "Владимир Евгеньевич Жаботинский", because Russians know him as a Russian-born journalist and translator? Also note that both names are unreadable to people that don't know the Cyrillic or Russian alphabet. All these things can be easily solved by using redirects, which Just Work with Nikola's extension, and i already wrote this at meta:Talk:A newer look at the interlanguage link, but some people may still find it troublesome.

As for the name of the project, i mostly agree with you. "Interlanguage" is too long and it is rarely used. Technically, the word "interwiki" refers to inline links to other wikis, such as meta:International Wikinews Writing Contest. In practice "interwiki" most often refers to Interlanguage links, but there may be some people that will find this confusing.

The best place to discuss all these matters would be meta:Talk:A newer look at the interlanguage link and maybe Wikitech-l.

Interlanguage Extension

Hey Amire, Thank you for your message. I just read the whole meta:Talk:A newer look at the interlanguage link and I was surprised that you guys did a big job trying to advertise for this proposal through different wikis and languages. I noticed that there were a large number of editors who were very enthusiast, but I'm perplexed to why all conversation just stopped in September. You're right, there's pretty much no more things you can do other than restarting the conversation, maybe in a more structured way, or by putting a notice on the community portal. Anyways, I'm out of ideas too. In the mean time, in the last week the number of votes in Bugzilla rose from 7 to 11. A good sign maybe? :-) Eklipse (talk) 20:00, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

The discussion stopped in September - not so long go, all in all - because there isn't much more to say. Question...

What's the policy (or guideline) for Rough Drafts? Are we supposed to finish the draft [in a personal subpage, eg. User:Username/sandbox] before creating an article? Or can we create the article as a Rough Draft? I was suggesting finishing the draft in a subpage to User:Rluhar. Did I do the right thing? You are right: Drafts which are so rough that they say it in the title and the body of the article, should stay in a sandbox until they're ready. In fact, you should be bold: move this page to User:Rluhar/2E Rough Draft and tag 2E Rough Draft for speedy deletion. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 20:01, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
