Faculty of Social Science(Hindi:Samajik Vigyana Sankay); is one of the oldest and distinguished centers of learning has a long lineage of strengthening the academic fabric of the Banaras Hindu University. It has hosted scores of scholars and researchers whose contribution has been recognized and acclaimed world over. In addition to the catering of teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the five disciplines of Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology, the Faculty has branched out its new direction by setting up new centres in areas such as, women's studies and peace studies along with some of the professional courses to meet the emerging challenges of present day world. Research is also an integral and significant component of the academic activity at the Faculty level and the contribution of some of the teachers has been recognized at the national and international levels.

It is one of the 14 Faculties in Banaras Hindu University.

History

The Faculty of Social Sciences (bifurcated from the Faculty of Arts),was established in 1971 with the aim to create landmark impacts with the help of the rigorous exercises done by the Sociologists, Psychologists, Economists, Political Scientists and Historians.

Campus

The Faculty of Social Science has two main Building which are know as New Building and Old Building. This two buildings have 5 departments which are Economics, Political Science, History, Psychology and Sociology.Other then this there are 5 centres of learning that are as follows: 1. Centre for Integrated Rural Development. 2. Malviya Centre for Peace Research 3. Centre for the Study of Nepal 4. Centre for Women's Study and Development 5. Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Property.

This Centre are established under various departments of Central Government and it contributes towards policy decision in the respective areas.

Babu Jagjivan Ram Chair for Social Research (BJRC) also comes under the supervision of Faculty of Social Science.

Admissions

Banaras Hindu University conducts national level undergraduate (UET) and postgraduate (PET) entrance tests usually during May–June for admission. Admissions are done according to merit in the entrance tests, subject to fulfilling of other eligibility requirements.Admission sare done for the courses of Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, History and Economics.

Other then a national level postgraduate exam is also conduced for MPMIR course under Department of Psychology .
