The Action off Onekotan was a naval engagement between a United States naval squadron and a Japanese naval force on 26 June 1945 off Onekotan in the Kuril Islands during World War Two.

Background

[edit]

By June of 1945, most major Japanese naval vessels had been destroyed in combat with Allied naval forces and those left in operation were largely inoperable due to severe fuel shortages. With limited fuel supplies to power their remaining warships, the Japanese navy resorted to utilizing small submarine chasers and patrol boats as escorts to defend their convoys against Allied attacks.

Battle

[edit]

The American destroyer's engaged the convoy after picking it up on their radar.[1] The Japanese squadron, replied erratically with anti-aircraft gun fire aimed at what the Japanese believed were attacking aircraft.
