World Institute of Kimchi(WiKim) was established in 86, Kimchi-ro, Nam-gu, Gwangju, South Korea as an annex of the Korea Food Research Institute (KFRI) and one of the government-funded institute in order to enhance the country’s status as the leader in the kimchi production, to spread kimchi-related culture worldwide, and to develop the kimchi industry through continued R&D efforts.

WiKim is dedicated to comprehensive R&D on kimchi, to research and project for the globalization of kimchi, and to research and technological support for industrial applications of kimchi.

WiKim’s major achievements are; it has identified functional lactic acid bacteria derived from kimchi which affect anti-obesity, improvement on atopic dermatitis and Parkinson’s disease, anti-cancer, hair growth, etc., it has developed a system for the development and distribution of fermentation starters for high-quality kimchi, it has confirmed white films on the surface of kimchi are colonies formed by yeasts without toxin genes, it has developed analytical technology about detecting norovirus of a causative agent of food poisoning, it has discovered phenyllactic acid with excellent antibacterial activity in kimchi, and so on.

Furthermore, according to getting acquisition of Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS) and being designated as Korea Excellent Laboratory Animal Facility (KELAF), WiKim is providing kimchi manufacturers with credible test in order that they spread kimchi market and develop functional food products.


History

  • January 1, 2010: WiKim was established as an annex of the Korean Food Research Institute (KFRI).
  • May 4, 2012: WiKim was designated as an agency to train kimchi experts by the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service.
  • October 31, 2012: WiKim moved to the new building established at Gwangju.
  • July 7, 2014: A grade-2 living modified organism (LMO)-related research facility was approved by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
  • October 24, 2017: Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS) approval was acquired by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards.
  • January 30, 2018: WiKim was accredited as a Korea Excellent Laboratory Animal Facility (KELAF) by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
  • November 6, 2018: WiKim was certified as a Safety Laboratory by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
  • April 30, 2019: WiKim was designated as a Food Testing Laboratory by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
