User:Wikitiki89/My English accent

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

THIS PAGE IS (AND FOREVER WILL BE) UNDER CONSTRUCTION -- INFORMATION MAY BE WRONG

Being born, growing up, and living in the North Shore of Boston, I have become fascinated by my own accent/dialect of English and would like to document it. Note that I will try to document everything even features that are common to most English accents/dialects. Note that my descriptions may contain unconventional analyses of English phonology.

Consonants

[edit]

The set of consonants is similar to most English accents and dialects. Unless otherwise noted, these distinctions do not cross morpheme or word boundaries.

  • The velar consonants /k/ and /ɡ/ are invariably palatalized to [kʲ] and [ɡʲ] before palatalizing vowels or palatal approximant /j/.*
  • Glottal /h/ is almost always palatalized to [xʲ] before palatal approximent /j/ and usually also before /i/.
  • Voiceless plosives /p/, /t/, and /k/ are aspirated before stressed vowels, unless preceded by /s/ (or /ʃ/ in loanwords).
