Early life

His father Jan Talich (1851-1915) came from an old farmer's family, however, he left the family tradition, and in 1880 he began to study music at the Prague Organ School as a pupil of František Skuherský. A year before that, in 1879, he married Antonie Moudrá (1848-1910). In 1882, following his graduation at the Organ School, Talich's father together with his family moved to Kroměříž, where he became the first teacher of the newly founded music school. Václav, his third child, was born in Kroměříž on 28 May, 1883.[1] The same year Talich's family moved to Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, and soon after that to Klatovy.[2]

Václav Talich showed musical talent from a very early age; he began playing the violin at the age of four, and as a ten year old he started to perform in public.[3] In 1893, he had attended a performance of violin virtuoso František Ondříček in Klatovy. He was deeply impressed with his playing and that experience strengthened his desire to become a professional violinist.[4] Talich's first artistic beginnings were connected also with his father's orchestra, where he played timpani. From 1893 to 1897 Talich studied at the gymnasium in Klatovy. As a student, he participated in musical life of the school and gained his first experience with chamber music; together with his classmates he formed student string quartet.

In 1896, he enrolled to study at the Prague Conservatory, however, he was not admitted; the main obstacle was poor financial situation of the family. At the beginning of 1887, his father left the family and young artist was dependent on the help of the family friends. They helped to accumulate the money needed to pay for school and Talich was allowed to leave to Prague.[6]

At the conservatory, Talich at first attended the class of a young pedagogue Jan Mařák, who quickly noted his poor living conditions and attempted to help him. Mařák arranged a meeting with Antonín Dvořák, who was on the top of his career at that time. Dvořák spent a part of his early career in similar conditions, therefore he decided to help a talented violinist. He managed to persuade Czech philanthropist Josef Hlávka to support Talich financially for the rest of his studies.

During his studies at the conservatory, Talich became familiar with the playing of one of his older classmates, violinist Jan Kubelík. Kubelík, a rising star of the Czech and European music scene, studied under Otakar Ševčík.

Lednice castle is a castle located in Lednice, South Moravia, Czech Republic. The castle is an important monument built in the style of Romantic Neo-Gothic. It is a part of the Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape.
