Croudson William Barnish
[edit]Croudson William Barnish (1883 - 14 August 1960) was a British business man, best known for holding the position of Chairman and Director of Unilever for more than ten years.
Career
[edit]The son of a doctor, Barnish was born in Wigan in 1883. He left school at the age of 14 to work in the sales office of Lever Brothers in Liverpool and went on to work abroad in the Export Department in India, Ceylon, Burma and South Africa. He was the director of Lever Brothers based at Port Sunlight from 1921 to 1930. He was also one of the first directors of Zog Ltd, a company formed by Lever Brothers in 1926. Barnich moved to London four years later as Chairman of the Unilever Home Soap Executive. He went on to become Chairman of the Overseas Committee and of the Continental Committee, before becoming Contact Director with special responsibilities in South Africa.
He was the director of Unilever Ltd and NV from 1930 to 1939. In March of that year he went to Malaya (Malaysia and Singapore)[1], Java (Indonesia)[2] and Siam (Thailand)[3]. He also visited Burma[4] in April 1939 and Egypt in April and December that same year. Barnish would continue visiting other countries (like South Africa, Lebanon, Egypt and Sudan) in business trips between 1939 to 1946.
He was again the Director of Unilever Ltd and NV from 1945 to 1948.
Barnish was a keen sportsman and supported sports and social organisations at Port Sunlight. A lounge at the Port Sunlight Men’s Club was named after him. Lord Leverhulme was Godfather to one of Barnish’s daughters. He retired from Unilever in 1948[5] and died on 14 August 1960 at the age of 77[6].
