Nick Matheos is a Russian-American composer, bass trombonist, and music educator. He is recognized for his work as a performer, his contributions to contemporary composition, and his dedication to music education. Matheos has held principal bass trombone positions in multiple orchestras and has been accepted into prestigious music institutions such as the Manhattan School of Music, Carnegie Mellon University, the Bard Conservatory, and Boston University.

Early Life and Education

Nick Matheos was born in Moscow, Russia, and later moved to the United States. He began playing the trombone at an early age, showing exceptional talent in both performance and composition. By his teenage years, he ranked among the top 5% of student trombonists in the country.

In 2025, Matheos was one of only four musicians accepted into the Manhattan School of Music and invited to audition for its elite program. He also received invitations to audition at Carnegie Mellon University, the Bard Conservatory, and Boston University.

He has performed in various settings, including musical theater, where he played in the official Broadway tour of Hello, Dolly! at the Ohio Renaissance Theatre and many other shows all over Ohio.

He likes to focus on the more lyrical side of his instrument. He also likes to perform new works frequently and student compositions wherever he goes.

Composition

As a composer, Matheos has created works for brass ensembles, orchestras, and chamber groups. His compositions are known for their rich harmonic textures and innovative use of counterpoint. He is a shining example of Neo-Impressionism and Semi-Romantic style. He also seems to like writing programmatic music. This often results in him painting a picture or telling a story by using his large and versatile set of compositional skills. Some of his works are published on JW Pepper and Musescore.

Teaching and Mentorship

Matheos is also an active music educator, serving as a lead teacher at the Salvation Army in Akron, Ohio. His teaching focuses on developing strong fundamentals, musical expression, and compositional techniques. As a trombone player, He heavily focuses on buzzing techniques and how air can be used effectively.
