Karma to Burn, is an Instrumental Hard Rock band from Morgantown, West Virginia comprising guitarist William Mecum, bassist Eric Clutter, and drummer Evan Devine. The band are noted for their crushing yet groovy live shows. After many nights where Mecum worked the door at Nyabinghi Dance Hall and created his own long island iced tea recipes, a recipe co founder Richard Mullins called a "Deflowering Device" as it quite often led both William and Richard to madness, long blackout periods of moon howling, carousing with larger members of the opposite sex and almost always ended in general vandalism and snoring the two youths attempted naming their band almost everynight after several of these concoctions. Their band that had 3 songs, one two and three, Mecum enjoyed naming tunes after numbers in his old band and Mullins encouraged him not to stop so almost every tune they wrote together there after was simply titled in chronological order,. Since not much effort was being wasted on song titles they had plenty to put into naming the band. Mecum offered up Call me Ahab as the first name, Ishmail was the second, it was at tis point Mullins realized his band brother was reading Herman Melville, many bad names were then run through from that book including Cozy Cold Cement which they actually would use once in Huntington on a surprise secondnigts engagement at their true second home John Kerwoods Gumbys. one of the greatest bars ever created, years later Mullins woudl be taught how to cook cocaine into crack by Kerwood while Kerwood designed what is now the Charlestion West Virginia Sound Factory (bleagh) and Kerwood died during one of their adventures, but that was later after Karma To Burn iplayed shows with Metallica,But back in the beginning during the nights Mecum and Mullins stood at the door to Nyabnghi fighting with Amy Tibbs or the other local bands in town like Moon, or Lincoln and get destroyed by Williams Long Island Iced Teas they jwould see awesome out of town bands roll throug the binghi and they would often start fights with these bands mostly because they were stupid drunk and Tibbs manioulated their immature brains on those insane iced teas but on some nights the two would hit just the right peak and think theu knew their band name but they did not, they in fact had terrible terribke ideas on those drinks and it was not until sober William remembered an earlier Thanksgiving when Orville Weal, Red Oaks bassist and local legend who some said was older than Gandalf and whom no one argued was way more stoned uttered the now infamous and famous name. Weal in fact had a solo album that was legendary titled Fork You, eich contained the track Lothlorien so the middle earth references were not too far off. Weal may or may not have been bugged by the DEA under suspicion that weed which was illegal back then kids may or may not have been traded for money in his presence. Weal who was born in Holland proclaimed in front of a very young William that when he as not caught by the DEA he had Karma To Burn. Mecum showed up at practice one morning and announced that was the band name a quick inconsequential vote was taken and 3 nil they had a name and William did in fact find a moniker equal to one of his kick ass non derivative riffs. By the way, William ad been playing guitar less than a year when he formed Karma To Burn and he and Mullins collaborated on 1 through 6 before Mecum really started taking off and wrote the verses to 7 and 8 within minutes and shaped the band for all time with them. To this dfay he has too many riffs swirloing in his head and Mullins has many of his style bass ideas and that was often a source of competition and bitterness as Mullins knew for every riff his bass created Mecum could come up with 50 guitar ideas and soon the avalanche of Williams ideas dominated and pushed Mullins to create bass lines that accented Williams different sections and eventually their chemistry dictated that everything be created this manner, That pressure often led Mecum to distance himself and often led Mullins to distance himself for the same yet separate reason. ----tubbysauto.

History

[edit]

First era (1997-2012)

[edit]

William Mecum and Richard Mullins met in 1992 while in their respective kickass bands Red Oak Conspiracy and Dancing Linda. Both bands had solid local followings and both could have had longevity on their own had this meeting not happened? Will and Rich clicked immediately and still to this day share a brotherhood that is often too intense. After several long island iced teas swore to start their ultimate idea of a band combining the riffs of Trouble and the grooves of well every cool seventoes band that they loved and of course adding in a healthy amount of Sonic Youth and Joy Division. Nathan Limbaugh who was swimming around South American rapids heard of the two bonding and immediately drove back to West Virginia. Within 4 months after their first gig and ten minutes after their first set at Brownies in New York City they had 5 record offers. This was in no small part to their manager Brian Barlows skill at imitating the band member of signed bands who did not ever ever speak to their a and r agents, that first NYC gig was filled with record execs and thus only one third of a year into their existence they were faced with serious choices that guys that young should not make while taking that much acid and they took a lot of acid. Limbaugh and Mullins especially had two different 11 day acid binges that were central in causing mass confusion witin their brains as to who to sign with. One day while hanging with their buddies City Chicken in Akron Ohio (later to become Disengaged) they watched Headbangers Ball and saw 7 roadrunner bands get air time, from Life of Agony to Gruntruck it looked like an easy choice all of sudden plus Roadrunner toild tem they could stay instrumental, KTB only being a band for 4 months still oscillated at times with auditioning singers, so they signed with Road Runner, the ink dried and the walls turned to flame and owner Ceese Wessels demanded theu have vocals on their record KTB spent the next 3 years trying out singers and begging RR to release their instrumental record...finally n 96 RR released KTB 10 inch instrumentally and it kicked ass and much love was spread and like some bands that wear masks or make up or eat birds onstage to have a gimmick KTB had a built in kick ass gimmick. Still RR owner Ceese Wessels ordered a double meeting where he would meet with Josh Homme in the morning and KTB in the afternoon, in the morning he toid Josh Homme he was not a good enough singer to front his own band Queens of the StoneAge, that afternoon he told KTB he would hold their contract forever if they didnt put vocals on the record. The band had recently become friends with John Garcia as they had opened for Kyuss on Sky Valley tour. An epic show btw...so John who needed a band agreed to work with KTB who drove to San Francisco to practice wit John, some great tunes were written but one night Nick Oliveri who lived in a parapalegics house, a house where everyone practiced, decided it was his birthday and Nick needed to go out. That night an odd green haired man accompanied them as well, they set off to san fran. Oliveri had promised his girlfriend who paid the bills that he would not go to the bar where his X girlfriend worked. Later while on their way home from the bar where Oliveris X worked little did they know that the strange green haired man who was not in the car with them for the ride home had passed out in the mens room stall. When he awoke and set off motion detectors he called Oliveris girlfriend to get a ride home. Of course she todl him to take a cab home from the one fucking bar she asked Nick not to go to in all of San Fran. The girlfriend waited on Nick to return, Nick and John did punch the front windshield out of the vehicle the five of them were riding in and the KTB guys decided the night was over and as soon as pulling up to Nicks block they jumped into their van, they never saw Nicks girllfriend her daughter and the parapalegic with his pet and best friend pit bull standing in the driveway waiting for Nick. The girl yelled at Nick he responded by knocking her to the ground with a punch to the head in front of her 12 year old daughter this outraged the pitbull which latched onto his arm, he shrieked and hit the dig with things like an acoustic guitar a baseball bat finall a glass coffee table did the trick, fatally injuring the parapalegics best friend his pit bull. The cops showed, Oliveri was bailed out and KTB was weirded out by the tale and felt alot like they did not dig the california aspect of joining with John and both sides decided to wait for another day. KTB went home, Mullins father died and Nathan Limbaugh quit the band within 1 hour of each other, no matter they Hired Chuck NIchoilas to drum and hirted Dancing Linda lead singer Jim Davision to join and sing, they wrote a great record however Jim did not feel up to the job when it came to crunch time and bowed out after taking acid and swalloqwing pieces of a bean bag chair. On the way to the emergency room he informed Mullins that he could go no further. KTB said fuck it, hired their friend Jason Jarosz an incredible painter to sing a Joy Division cover, they figured that song and John Garcias vocals on Two TImes made the vovcals for the record...NOPE Ceese Wessells wanted all the songs but 3 to have vocals. Mecum immediately gave their producer a migraine that heroin could not fix and the producer left the project. A few weeks later a and r wiz Howie Abrams found Daniel Wise to finish the record. Mullins and Jariosz would wake up in the morning and write a melody a lyrics together and Mullins would sing high parts and Jarosz low, just to get that damn record done and that is why they were always bummed and when RR bought the license to their instrumental second record which was written after shows with the Jesus Lizard toughened the KTB guys up to a point where they could kick ass anywhere anytime and they wrote killer riffs with Mecum a fountain of guitar genius and Mullins a flood of original bass lines they washed ashore in europe strung out on Heroin and starting to have tiffs that were not so easily talked down from....anywho somewhere along the line Mullins ingested hertoin crack cocaine regular cocaine a ton of whippets and a gallon of gallo wine (Burgandy) woke up the next morning and threw up so hard his stomach disconnected from is esophagus, as he puked coagulating blood into a garbage can Nicholas ran away leaving him vomiting blood and miniutes from death. Mullins fired Nicholas during the ambulance ride to the hospital where luckily his next door neigbor whom he had pissed off the night before because Mullins partied damn loudly was the surgeon who used a laser to burn Mullins stomach back on to his esophagus. Mullins pulled the tubes out of his nose and wrists that late ight and fled back to the city bought an eight ball of coke and called Mecum to party and to plan on playing Baltimore with a drummer named Rob Oswald sitting in. Rob joined and that became the band most know as Karma To Burn. Blah blah blah. they fought and broke up when Mullins went to Speedealer then Year Long Disaster, Mecum to Treasure Cat Oswald to Nebula, they hooked back up in 2008 and could not get along again in 2012-2013....Mecum plays on with the name Karna To Burn.

They have records out...the 2nd one Wild Wonderful Purgatory, the 3rd Almost Heathen, then Cat got our Tongue and the original ten inch or demo cassette are the ones you want.

Better description of REUNION (2009-2010)

[edit]

On February 23, 2009, Karma to Burn reformed with the line-up being the same as when they disbanded. They toured extensively, hitting both the US and Europe.[1] Their European tour included a second stage slot at the Download Festival, which has now become infamous for the wasp swarm above the crowd throughout.[2] A year after reuniting, Karma To Burn were in the stages of finishing a fourth full-length album, which was produced by Scott Reeder formerly of the stoner rock band Kyuss. The album, Appalachian Incantation, was released in April 2010, and included two vocal tracks: 'Waiting on the Western World', featuring Year Long Disaster vocalist and guitarist Daniel Davies, and 'Two Times,' featuring former Kyuss vocalist John Garcia. The rest of the album consisted of instrumental selections.[3] The band toured Europe after its release, including a nine date UK run supported by bassist Mullins's other band, Year Long Disaster.[4]

In a May 2010 interview with Uber Rock, Daniel Davies commented on a planned merger between the bands Year Long Disaster and Karma To Burn:

"The bands are starting to kind of merge together. We wrote that song together and we liked it so we're thinking that maybe we should write some more songs together. I think that is where it's leading to now."[5]

In June 2010, Year Long Disaster toured Europe with all three members of Karma To Burn as part of the band.[6] The favour was returned on Karma To Burn's European summer tour, with Davies stepping in as an occasional guitarist (and, when needed, vocalist) for the band. Karma To Burn then announced it plans to record a swift follow-up to Appalachian Incantation with an album featuring several songs with vocals by Davies, to be released in 2011, further blurring the boundaries between it and Year Long Disaster. The speculation as to whether Davies had joined the band was confirmed by his inclusion in the band picture on K2B's website[7] and, more solidly, by Rich Mullins himself in an interview with Rock Radio.[8]

K2B headlined the Jägermeister stage at the UK leg of Sonisphere Festival 2010.,[9] and supported The Sword on their 2010 winter US tour[10] and in Europe the following November.

The follow-up to Appalachian Incantation, V, was recorded in February 2011, at Dave Grohl's Studio 606, and includes Davies' vocals on three songs, although he has since started a project outside Karma to Burn and left the group, returning the band to a trio. V was released in June 2011, followed by more extensive touring of the USA and Europe. The band were also set to record a song for John Garcia's solo project, Garcia Vs. Garcia.[11] On September 7, it was said via Twitter that Karma To Burn had finished recording 3 tracks with John Garcia, though for which projects was left unclear.[12]

Evan Devine of Morgantown metal band Ancient Shores filled in on drums for Karma To Burn during their 2012 European tour.
