Viddy is a free mobile application that makes it simple for anyone to capture, beautify, and share videos. The application is compatible with any iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch running iOS 4.1 or above, allows users to quickly turn 15-second raw mobile videos into cinematic-looking shorts by using the app’s “production packages” to add features such as visual effects, graphics, color correction and audio.[1] Users can share videos through the Viddy app or using a variety of other Social Networking products such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube.
As of May 2011, Viddy has been downloaded over 500,000 times.[2] The app has been credited and adopted by several celebrities including Charlie Sheen, Paris Hilton, Snoop Dogg, and lifecaster iJustine.[3][4] Charlie Sheen announced that Viddy is "winning" and Paris Hilton mentioned Viddy as her “favorite new app” in an interview with Young Hollywood.[4]
Panic at the Disco used Viddy to crowd-source its next music video.[5] At her Noh8 shoot, Lindsay Lohan posted a video via Viddy asking users to post videos to show their support for the protest against the gay marriage ban.[6]
Company
[edit]Founded by JJ Aguhob and Brett O’Brien, Viddy has garnered $1.6 million in funding from Battery Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners and Qualcomm Ventures. Angel investors included some early team members from YouTube. [2]
The Viddy app launched on April 11, 2011. Within two weeks, the app received nearly 150,000 downloads.[7]
It has been described as being "like Twitter with video updates instead of status updates”[4] and "like a mashup of Twitter, YouTube and Instagram".[8]
In May 2011, Viddy was featured on iTunes as iPhone App of The Week.[9]
In June 2011, two enhancements to the app were released: the ability to delete comments and two new production packages, GLAM and RETRO.
