Herbert Lloyd Permillion III (May 3, 1943 – Dec 27, 2023) was a IBM typewriter service team member and owner of California Typewriter, a longstanding typewriter repair shop in Berkeley, CA. Herb was the subject of the documentary feature film, California Typewriter
Biography
[edit]Permillion was born in New Oreleans to a line of jazz musicians, his father a big-band trumpeter. In his youth, his family relocated to Oakland, CA and later to Berkely, CA. He graduated from Berkeley High School in 1961. Permillion was later employed by Pacific Bell in 1961, and in 1967 joined IBM as a repairman. [1]
Permillion married his first wife in 1967, and had two daughters , Candace & Carmen. The couple were divorced twelve years later in 1978.
He took ownership of California Typewriter, a typewriter repair shop on Shattuck AVE, in 1982. The business was later moved to its final location on San Pablo Ave in Berkely, his own property. [1]
California Typewriter was notable for continuing to support typewriter enthusiasts for decades despite the technology being almost completely abandoned. Permillion continued to operate the business despite financial struggles. [2]
Recognition
