User Page for Thaddeus Ballantine

I'm here as an editor to help improve content and to participate in a truly awesome project such as Wikipedia is. I consider myself to be more of an editor than a content producer. I like to find references for obscure trivia that has been flagged. I don't like excessive wikilnks. I think they are one of the coolest things about Wikipedia, but used excessively make the body text more difficult to read. Most good things in life are best in moderation. I will bring up topics in the talk section though I don't like to debate. More that likely even if you are dead wrong I won't reply or join in the discussion unless you send a private message to me. I treat this page and my sandbox as testing ground for anything or to give me something to learn. Just remember be bold and give everyone the benefit of not having doubt in them.

Working on the Main Page - I

Being the gateway to the encyclopedia - the Main Page is Wikipedia's most frequently visited page. The main page is always protected and can only be edited by admins. But, most of the content on the main page is piped in each day from various departments, via templates. The volunteers in these departments work year round to prepare the content on the Main Page to be viewed by the World each day.

The departments that prep content for the Main Page are:

Wikipedia:Today's featured article – prepares excerpts from featured articles, to be displayed on the main page.
Wikipedia:Did you know – prepares and selects "hooks" to new articles or articles that have been expanded by a factor of five.
Wikipedia:In the news – participants nominate blurbs from Portal:Current events, and decide which of these get displayed on the main page. Admins post the blurbs as soon as they are approved.
Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries – prepares the pages that get displayed in the "On this day" section of the main page.
Wikipedia:Picture of the day – copies and formats featured pictures into the POTD scheduling queue, and writes the captions that accompany the pictures.

Anybody can help prep the pages that feed into the main page's templates (up until the day they are displayed on the Main Page), by proofreading and correcting them, and we encourage you to do so. (continued tomorrow)

Gao Qifeng (1889–1933) was a Chinese painter who co-founded the Lingnan School. He spent much of his early life following his older brother Gao Jianfu, learning the techniques of Ju Lian before travelling to Tokyo in 1907 to study Western and Japanese painting. While abroad, Gao joined the revolutionary organization Tongmenghui to challenge the Qing dynasty; after he returned to China, he published the nationalist magazine The True Record. He moved to Guangzhou in 1918, taking teaching positions that culminated with an honorary professorship at Lingnan University in 1925. Falling ill in 1929, Gao left for Ersha Island, where he established the Tianfang Studio. He blended traditional Chinese approaches to painting with Japanese techniques for light and shadow and Western understandings of geometry and perspective. Gao is best recognized for his paintings of animals, particularly eagles, lions, and tigers. (Full article...)
