Greeting to the Wikipedia collective from a relative newcomer. Thank you for the amazing work that you do. Wikipedia is a truly remarkable resource.
I work in the language service industry and do from time to time edit and proofread documents such as annual reports and performance plans and would love to contribute to the growth of Wikipedia.
One of my motivations for registering as a user was to gain a more in-depth understanding and knowledge of how wiki websites work. I have an idea for a collaborative website for which wiki software would be ideal.
I recently came upon a Wikipedia entry (a stub), that is badly written and full of factual errors. I did a search for John Vorster Square and Wikipedia redirects to:
http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Johannesburg_Central_Police_Station
I have done some research into John Vorster Square and took the liberty of editing this article a week or two ago - just to correct the factual errors regarding the number of detainees who died in John Vorster Square.
I personally think it is an error to redirect a Wikipedia search for John Vorster Square (which has current notability) to Johannesburg Central Police Station (which has no real relevance in an encyclopedia).
Yesterday I submitted an article called "John Vorster Square under Apartheid" for review and understand that it may take 2 to 3 weeks before it is assessed for publication.
I still have much to learn and my aim is to spend the next few days going through more of the basic tutorials.
I am also slowly starting to work on a second article on Stanza Bopape, one of the political activists who died in detention in John Vorster Square.
Looking forward to interacting and collaborating with fellow Wikipedians.
With respect
Steve
