Enthiran TFA blurb
[edit]Enthiran ([Robot] Error: {{Langx}}: text has italic markup (help)), is a 2010 Indian Tamil-language science fiction film directed by S. Shankar and co-written by him and Sujatha Rangarajan. Produced by Kalanithi Maran, it stars Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai. The story revolves around a scientist's struggle to control his creation, an android, whose software is upgraded to give it the ability to comprehend and exhibit human emotions. The project backfires when the robot falls in love with the scientist's girlfriend, and is manipulated by a rival scientist into becoming homicidal. Enthiran received praise for its cinematography, art direction, visual effects and Rajinikanth's performance, and emerged as the top-earning Indian film of 2010. It is currently the second highest-grossing South Indian film of all time. It won two National Film Awards, three Filmfare Awards, seven Vijay Awards and two Screen Awards. It spawned parodies and homages to specific scenes. (Full article...)

Sivaji
[edit]In popular culture
[edit]In Telugu film Eega (2012), Sudeep is seen watching Sivaji in Television.[6] In a comedy scene from Guru En Aalu (2009), Vivek and M. S. Bhaskar imitates Rajni and Shriya respectively and did a spoof on song "Oru Koodai Sunlight".[7] Scenes were spoofed in Thamizh Padam (2010). Similar to scene from Sivaji, Siva meets a minister to report about the lack of water, he gives away his cycle to him. His unique way of signing documents is also based on Sivaji. A lady's laptop and its codeword is similar to Rajini's laptop from the film.[8]

However, his integrity came under scrutiny after he was arrested in July 2011 on the charges of cheating and intimidation of a film distributor.[9]
Enthiran
[edit]On 22 September 2008, six stills featuring Rajinikanth and Rai in "Kilimanjaro" were leaked onto the internet.[10]
In preparation for her role, she had her dialogue translated from Tamil to English and rehearsed it the night before each day of filming.[11]
Box office
[edit]According to a report by The Independent, Enthiran earned US$13.8 million worldwide in its opening weekend—including US$4.4 million in the United States alone.[12] Enthiran grossed ₹580 million from all languages in the first weekend,[13] and ₹1.17 billion in the first week, surpassing the collections of Dabangg (2010), which grossed ₹820 million in the first week of its theatrical run.[14] The film grossed ₹600 million in Tamil Nadu, ₹300 million in Andhra Pradesh, ₹130 million in Kerala and ₹40 million in Karnataka in its first week.[14] The film earned a lifetime total of ₹169.4 million in Chennai.[15]
In its first week, the Hindi version, Robot, collected ₹34 million in Mumbai and Thane from 107 screens, ₹9.6 million in Delhi from 27 screens, and ₹5.6 million in Ahmedabad from 28 screens.[16] Robot earned ₹214.7 million its lifetime, with a distributor's share of ₹101.1 million, and was declared an "Average grosser" by Box Office India.[17]
Enthiran earned a lifetime gross of $3.05 million and $785,837 in Malaysia and the United Kingdom respectively,[18] while Robot earned $9,148 in Malaysia and $191,357 in the United Kingdom.[19] In Singapore, the film grossed S$2.5 million from 22 theatres.[20] In the United Arab Emirates, Enthiran grossed $302,000 in the first weekend while Robot grossed $86,000.[21] In Sri Lanka, the film did not perform well at the box office, as the people there found it "outlandish" and that it was more of an "English" film rather than a Tamil film.[22]
Enthiran opened at twelfth position in the United States in its opening weekend collecting $1,520,108 from 64 screens, while Robo debuted at seventeenth in its opening weekend, collecting $481,680 from 36 screens and Robot at thirty-fourth position in its opening weekend collecting $364,390 from 39 screens.[23][24][25] In the first weekend, Enthiran opened at eleventh position in the United Kingdom collecting £295,148 from 30 screens while Robot opened at 21st position collecting £62,134 from 41 screens.[26]
According to Eros International, Enthiran had grossed ₹610 million overseas in its opening weekend – including ₹200 million in the United States, ₹80 million across Europe, ₹170 million in the Middle East and ₹210 million in South East Asia.[27][28]
In Popular Culture
[edit]The music video for the 2011 song "Run the World" by Beyoncé shows her taming two drooling hyenas in reins in the style of a dominatrix, similar to how Chitti controls two robotic lions on leash in "Arima Arima".[29]
Possible sequel
[edit]In February 2011, it was reported that the crew was discussing the possibility of a sequel to Enthiran.[30] R. Rathnavelu confirmed that they were planning to start the sequel by retaining some of the crew, including A. R. Rahman, Shankar and Sun Pictures. In March 2011, The Times of India said that production might start "once Rajinikanth completes Rana".[31] V. Srinivas Mohan endorsed this a couple of months later.[32] Behindwoods reported in June 2014 that Reliance Entertainment apparently showed "strong interest" in producing the sequel,[33] but as of November 2014, no further work on the sequel has materialised.[34]
