Hapert (ⓘ) (Brabants: Haopert) is a village that makes up part of the municipality Bladel, in the Dutch province North Brabant. The place is located in the De Kempen region and is home to 5,440 citizens (2018) including a hamlet called Dalem.
Etymology
[edit]The original meaning of the name Hapert (Heopurdum) isn't easy to determine. The meaning could be 'a place where aspens (Populus treumula) grow'. Other experts think that the name could be derived from the Dutch word 'hengst' (stallion).
History
[edit]The village was first mentioned in the year 710 in a charter, under the name of Heopurdum. The place name has also been written as haperdum hap(p)aert or hap(p)ard, but from the 12th century onward it has been called Hapert.
The original medieval church village Hapert originated in a narrow sand dune between the valleys of the Groote Beerze and the Wagenbroeks Loopje. The village existed from six hamlets: Kerkeneind, Lemel, De Straat, De Pan, Ganzestart and Dalem. The 'Oude Provinciale weg', 'Castersedijk' and the 'Ganzestraat' are the roads along which linear settlement originated and formed the basis of its core.
