Premise

[edit]

It’s 1935 in Gyeongseong, and struggling artist Yun Yi-ho has been commissioned by the reclusive, elderly Madam Song Jeong-hwa to paint a portrait. Madam Song Jeong-hwa allows Yun Yi-ho to set eyes upon her -- an unprecedented event -- and standing before him is a young woman. But why does she ask him to paint an elderly version of her? “Don’t finish the portrait.” Tucked between the previous artist’s paint tubes is an ominous letter. Yun Yi-ho learns that no artist has left Madam Song Jeong-hwa’s abode alive or of sound mind. Just what is she hiding and what will happen if Yun Yi-ho finishes the portrait?

Development

[edit]

On June 2021, Showbox plans to produce dramas based on webtoons such as “The Witch” and “Hyunhok” in the future. It also plans to produce OTT series as global OTT platforms such as Disney Plus are about to enter the Korean market.[1]

According to a film industry insider on September 2, 2021, director Han Jae-rim recently began producing a drama based on the webtoon 'Hyunhok'. The original webtoon 'Hyunhok' is a mystery horror period drama that depicts a story of a mysterious vampire set in Gyeongseong in 1935 and Shanghai in the 1800s. It was serialized on Naver in 2019 and received much love. 'Hyunhok', which is being produced as a series, is currently in the early stages of production and will be produced by Showbox and Magnum Nine. The platform has not been decided yet, and the full-scale filming period has not been set yet.[2]

Magnum Nine is film production company established in 2010 by HAN Jae-rim, a film director better known for <The Show Must Go On> (2006) and <The Face Reader> (2013). After releasing its first production <The Exclusive: Beat the Devil's Tattoo> (2015), it found success with <The King> (2016), a crime drama film directed by HAN.[3]

Casting

[edit]

Previously, 'Hyunhok' had a confusing situation during the casting process for the lead actors. This was the aftermath of the rumors surrounding the relationship between actors Ryu Jun-yeol and Han So-hee, who were initially considered for the lead roles in the drama, and who admitted to being a couple in Hawaii last March and then broke up again.

An official from her agency Management Soop told Sports Chosun on July 30, 2024, "Suzy has received an offer to appear in director Han Jae-rim's new film 'Hyunhok' and is currently reviewing it."[4]

In the end, the production team went back to casting after the two actors who had been offered the lead roles first decided not to participate in 'Hwanok', and after discussion, they settled on a two-top system with Kim Seon-ho and Suzy.[5]
