Rear Admiral Rowan Carlisle Moffitt, AO, (b. 29 September1955) is the currently leading the devlopment of the RAN's future submarine project within the Defence Materiel Organisation. He has held this position since February 2009.
Service career
[edit]Born and schooled in Sydney, Moffitt graduated from the Royal Australian Naval College, Jervis Bay, at the end of 1975. After Seaman Officer training and several postings at sea and ashore as a junior officer, he undertook specialist surface warfare and navigation training in England and Australia in the mid-eighties.
This was followed by postings as the Navigator in the guided missile destroyers HMAS Brisbane and HMAS Hobart and as the Staff Navigator to the patrol boat and mine warfare force commander.
As a Commander, he served as Executive Officer and briefly Commanding Officer of the destroyer HMAS Brisbane, on the staff of Headquarters Australian Defence Force and undertook the Joint Services Staff Course, before commissioning the new frigate HMAS Newcastle as Commanding Officer in mid 1993. He was then head of the Warfare Faculty at the RAN Surface Warfare School until promotion to Captain at the end of 1995.
As a Captain he had a lengthy tour as the Fleet Operations Officer, a year of study for a Masters in Business Administration at Monash University's Mt Eliza Business School and a second period in command of HMAS Brisbane.
He was promoted to Commodore at the end of 1999 and served as the Director General Navy Capability Management in Navy Headquarters, then as Commandant of the Australian Defence Force Warfare Centre at RAAF Base Williamtown.
Promoted to Rear Admiral in mid-2002, he was the Deputy Chief of Navy for two years then Maritime Commander Australia, commanding the Royal Australian Navy fleet before taking up the position as the Australian Deputy Chief of Joint Operations, at Headquarters Joint Operations Command.
Honours and awards
[edit]Moffitt was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queens Birthday Honours List in 2004 for "exceptional service to the Royal Australian Navy and the Australian Defence Force as the Director General Navy Capability Performance and Plans, Commandant of the Australian Defence Force Warfare Centre and as Deputy Chief of Navy.".[1] He was promoted to become an Officer of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day honours list in 2009 for distinguished service as Maritime Commander Australia and Deputy Chief of Joint Operations.[2]
