User:PC-XT/KIS
This page includes my templates and recommendations for pseudoproject WP:KIS. Feel free to comment on the talk page.
Resources
[edit]The Keep It Simple project developed these resources:
- Labels as mini userboxes: WP:KIS/label with documentation at WP:KIS and WP:KIS/label
- Babel labels, moved to WP:KIS/Babel and now with documentation at WP:Keep It Simple/Babel
- WikiProject labels
- Custom labels
- Containers:
- WP:Keep It Simple/tray top and WP:Keep It Simple/tray bottom
- WP:Keep It Simple/box top and WP:Keep It Simple/box bottom
- {{user icon corner top}} and {{user icon corner bottom}} were used by the project as icon/label containers
- There may be others documented in WP:Keep It Simple/Options
- Mini lapel pin barnstars: I want to look into making one template to handle them all.
The idea was to have this stuff smaller, overlapping, and simple-looking so it wouldn't take over the page.
Similar things that cooperate:
- {{top icon}}, which is used in a few newer KIS templates
- {{Usbktop}}, {{Usbkbottom}} and {{Usbk}} are for display of userbox templates
- User icons overlapped the project in the past, using {{user icon corner top}} and {{user icon corner bottom}}, intermixed with lapels or labels.
- Wikipedia:WikiProject_Flag_Template
- Perhaps any other icons that may exist.
How to make labels
[edit]Page naming conventions
[edit]The new page should be in your userspace, preferably as a subpage of one named KIS, after WP:UM.
WikiProject labels may be a subpage in project space.
New labels as subpages of WP:KIS or Wikipedia:Keep It Simple are not recommended, at least not without discussion on Wikipedia Talk:Keep It Simple.
Categories
[edit]In the template documentation, include Category:Keep It Simple templates. Note that userbox guidelines discourage userboxes from adding categories to user pages, even though many do so. Use the category options built into {{WP:KIS/label}} carefully.
Label text
[edit]There are two widely used methods:
- The organized way is to use a capital letter prefix, such as W: for Wikipedia-related labels, or WP: for wikiprojects. These prefixes are listed on WP:KIS.
- The custom way is without these prefixes. Some find the prefixes distracting, confusing or just archaic, and omit them in their own labels.
How we got here
[edit]KIS was started as a WikiProject for an alternative to userboxes. Since it didn't relate directly to articles, it was found to not be a real project. This pseudoproject used to have labels in Template space, but since this discussion, all have been migrated to either userspace or subpages of WP:KIS or WP:Keep It Simple. This page was used to plan some of this migration. (archived migration version of this page) I continue to improve labels as I have time. (Archived more recent worklist)
Templates in my userspace

Miscellaneous
[edit]- {{WP KIS}} is a template for KIS, though in WP pseudonamespace instead of user pseudonamespace. This may or may not be close enough to project space. - left alone for now
- {{user icon corner top}}, {{user icon corner bottom}}, and other user icon templates are in good standing elsewhere, but are also used by KIS.
- {{user labels}} is a test userbox, unrelated to KIS, that one inactive User:Discordance currently uses.
