From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jón Reykdal (January 14, 1945 - January 30, 2013) was an Icelandic painter and printmaker. He studied art at Iceland's School of Art and Handicrafts 1962-1966 and graduated from there as a drawing teacher. He studied graphics at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam 1968-1969 and at the Royal Institute of Arts in Stockholm 1969-1971 and Teckningslärarskolan 1971-1972. After studying, Jón taught at Iceland's School of Art and Crafts for about twenty years, first as a supervising teacher of the drawing department and later as a teacher and head of the graphics department for several years. He took a break from teaching in 1988 and devoted himself to art for several years. In 1993, he became a part-time teacher at the University of Iceland and then took up the position of lecturer in visual arts in 2003 at the same school, which is now the Faculty of Education at the University of Iceland, and held that position until his sick leave in 2012.

It can be said that the first part of Jón's career was devoted to graphics and he was a major driving force in Icelandic graphic art in the 80s and 90s. The last thirty years were mostly devoted to painting, photography and teaching. Jón worked diligently on social issues related to art. He was chairman of the association Íslensk grafík 1975-1978 and sat on the board of FÍM 1977-1982. He was on the board of the Nordic Art Center in Sveaborg, Helsinki 1980-1982, and on the board of the same institution 1982-1984. He was on the board of Kjarvalsstaðir 1978-1984, was chairman of the committee of the Icelandic Literature Prize in the category of fiction in 1999 and on the board of Listvinafélag Hallgrímskirkja from 1999-2009.

Jón held a number of solo exhibitions and took part in group exhibitions at home and abroad from 1969. He also illustrated and made book covers for dozens of books. His works of art are owned by individuals and public museums here at home and abroad.

Graphics

[edit]

Jón Reykdal studied graphics with Braga Ásgeirsson at the Art and Handicraft School in the early 1970s and then went on to further study the art form in Amsterdam and Stockholm. He re-established the company Íslenzk grafík in 1969 together with painter Einar Hákonarsyn. The association was first founded in 1954 by the artists Jón Engilberts and Veturliða Guðnason[1] but was largely dormant until it was re-established in 1969. The first board of the re-established association consisted of chairman Einar Hákonarson, treasurer Björg Þorsteinsdóttir and secretary Valgerður Bergsdóttir. "The goal of the association is to promote, through presentations and exhibitions, interest and knowledge in graphic art."[2] It can be said with truth that the association has achieved its goals since graphics became popular in the homes of the people and that led to a misunderstanding that graphics would not be full-fledged fine art but the same as a reprint, corrected.[3]

Jón Reykdal was chairman of the association Íslensk grafík 1975-1978. The association hosted numerous group exhibitions of members in Iceland and abroad, graphic portfolios were published, graphic artists from various countries were invited to exhibit with the group and hold workshops. The pioneers in Icelandic graphics were honored with honorary society titles and an exhibition.[4]

Icelandic graphics pioneered innovations such as borrowing the artworks for fitting, discount terms and split payments. The association, together with the Alliance of Nordic Graphic Artists with a grant from the Nordic Culture Fund, was responsible for the foundation donation of 180 graphic artworks by 75 graphic artists from all the Nordic countries[5][6] to the Nordic House in Reykjavík, which became the art loan department of the Nordic House. That art loan department is still operating.
