General
[edit]The game Battleships Crossfire X was announced to be a free to play Seafaring Action RTS which will be released in 2015.[1][2][3] It will consist of Pirate Ships versus Naval Ships. The concept and mechanics is based on the original Battleships Crossfire, a modification of Warcraft 3.
In Battleships Crossfire X two teams of usually 5 players are fighting to control the sea and to destroy the main harbour of the other team. The ships are man powered, wind driven, or steam powered. The vessels range from small dinghies to massive tallships and early submarines like in Jules Verne - Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Later there will be more team options, for other gameplay variants.
Battleships Crossfire for Warcraft 3
[edit]In 2005 Battleships Crossfire was made as a modification for Warcraft 3. The game is played with two teams, 4v4 player mode, North Alliance versus South Alliance. Also in the modification there is an option to play in a 4v4v2 player mode where the North and South Alliance have to defeat each other first, while a third team called the Goblins can intervene to turn the tides.
Original Battleships was made by "sked", who left it open to be re-edited by others.[4] Then it was remade for several modifications such as Battleships Crossfire, Battleships, Battleships Pro,[5] Battleships Advanced, Battleships Psycho and many others.[6]. Since 2005 "Say_No_to_War" and a team of map makers, programmers, 2D artists, and 3D artists make the modification Battleships Crossfire.
The objective for both teams is to sink the enemy captains and destroy their base. The captain can buy more weapons and bigger ships with gold. A team wins if they manage to destroy the enemy main harbor.
Each player controls one "hero ship" with several different abilities. A wide variety of ships with different skill sets and abilities are available at designated shipyard. The options of ships, items and weapons allow thousands of different combinations for a large variety of tactics. Weapons are item based and automatically fire on nearby enemies. They have different ranges from short range to long range with mathematical balancing and are priced accordingly. To become a skilled player you need to fight with the right distance and angle. You need to use your ship's abilities wisely and hide in the fog of war. Therefore it's a strategic and tactical game which allows skilled players to become very successful.
In the original Battleships Crossfire, players can choose from over 70 ships with unique abilities and counter tactics.[7] There are about 200 weapons and 100 other items available providing speed, health, armor, repair and other improvements.[8] Players can choose at start between several different game modes such as No Trader, Short Mode, Tourney, Normal Game, Fishing and Whale Hunting. There is a league with high scores and about 40 000 players.[9]
Battleships Crossfire X
[edit]In the upcoming Battleships Crossfire X the gameplay was announced to be based on the Mods for Warcraft 3 especially Battleships Crossfire.[1][2][3] Each player will start out with a default ship and a set amount of gold to purchase an initial set of weapons, armor, speed, hull, repair and other special items.
Each base or harbor consists of buildings selling various weapons, armors, repairs and speed enhancers. As the game continues more gold is earned allowing a player to upgrade their ship to a bigger one, while keeping all previously bought items and crew. Outside the main harbors of each team, there are multiple hidden buildings, and private harbors, which sell different ships and a variety of better support items. They are strategically placed on the map to be fair to both teams. There are also certain buildings available for the trade routes of traders.
Each side is guarded with towers which need to be destroyed in order to destroy the outer harbors. To win the game a player's team must destroy the enemy's main inner harbor.
The objectives are to sink the ships of your human enemies, destroy midway towers to earn gold and to push the opposing team back to their harbor. The strategy falls upon the player and the team, anticipating the enemies moves from behind the cloak of fog of war, using and countering abilities, ships or weapon tactics.
Items: Several hundreds of different items, weapons, hulls, sails, repair woods, repair crews, trade items and also some castable items.
Ships: Around 100 different ships, organized in classes which become available over time and can be used to counter other ships.
Before you can use them in the game some weapons, skins, pets or ships have to be bought for and in-game currency, doubloons, which can be earned by playing the game or can be bought at the store front with ingots. But the game will be completely free-to-play and all gameplay-influencing items will also be buyable for doubloons.
Game modes
[edit]Game modes are usually voted by the players. There are four modes planned:
Normal mode: Allows for several traders without the ability to build additional structures, however it does allow for an additional trade ship. The trade ship offers increased speed, better armor, better abilities, and an extra slot for a single weapon. No special enhancements are granted for the players. The role of the trader will consist of someone who gets gold faster than the other players. The teammates must guard the trader on the trading routes.
Trader mode: Players will have the option of choose to be a trader. Traders learn the skill of evasion and sneaking. The object is to avoid enemy fire, and complete special trading missions. As a reward, the trader can assist fellow players by giving the gold to his/her allies. The trader can also buy special trader-weapons.
Short mode: All players get more gold over time and more gold for kills. AI-controlled ships spawn at a higher rate with greater movement speed. Buildings have lower hit points. No traders can be chosen.
Tourney/No Trader mode: The same gold for player kills is as in short mode, but buildings have the same hit points. Everything like in normal mode but no traders.
Game attributes
[edit]Game attributes can be voted on by the players as a secondary option. There are four attributes planned:
Greenpeace & Whale Hunting: Allows traders to become mineral seekers and activists to ward off enemy whalers in several ways. Gold and points are awarded for saving one of the whales. People who hunt whales can gather up material for creating extra healing foods or selling the material for gold.
Fishing: Allows for anyone to have the option to put beacons on animals. These beacons will give a limited range of vision in the fog of war. You can fish for food to assist with healing and other stats or sell fishing materials for gold. This attribute also enables a dodo clock. This clock allows for a special weapon to be unlocked by the lucky person who finds the last great dodo. The last great dodo is randomly placed somewhere on the map in neutral territory. Good luck finding it!
All special modes: Both the Greenpeace & Whaling attribute and the Fishing attribute are activated.
Normal: Allows for no special attributes or bonuses.
Shop
[edit]Player kills generate a very small amount doubloons. Bonus doubloons are granted for the winning team. Player deaths and a lost game will grant less doubloons in that game. Ingots can be purchased via PayPal, Amazon pay, credit cards and other payment possibilities. Ingots can be converted into doubloons or used to purchase in game items.
With the doubloons players will be able to buy Shop Items. The store system will contain various things to improve the game play experience without changing the balance of the game. Every shipclass and weapon will also be available over time for playing.
Such things in the in-game store include: Avatar Upgrades such as Coats of different lengths, colors, and features. Head gear, boots, peg legs, hooks, scabbards, swords, daggers, lanterns, muskets, and canons, avatar skins, tattoos, earrings, eye patches, flag insignias, and a multitude of pets; Special ships out of the over 100 ships as well as skins and additional models for ships; Special Weapons and items out of about 1000 different possibilities, from various types of cannons, musketeers to silly weapons like birds with barrels of explosives; Special Sounds that can be played in certain situations and special offers for various occasions; Guild Bases as a separate individual designable harbor to be a sort of lobby; Tokens to complete avatar and ship remodeling and customization.
Prices of store items will vary depending on type, attributes, features, supply and demand.
