Hi this is kido
The genre of music that had impacted me the most is unquestionably jazz. Jazz is the music that has redesigned my outlook on music and shifted my career trajectory to music. In regards to style, jazz is very broad due to its progressive nature that continuously pushes the boundaries of the genre. Fortunately the fundamental qualities of jazz remain relatively consistent throughout its dynamic trajectory.
One key distinctive quality of Jazz is its swing feel that comes from a blend of unique articulation, conception of 8th-notes and rhythmic emphasis on the up beat (2). The swing groove creates a drive that establishes the unique jazz feel and sound.
Another notable quality that covers a substantial portion of the Jazz language is its heavy emphasis on improvisation. Unlike most genres, the meat of Jazz performances is the improvised solo and the melodies are often treated as musical frameworks that the improvisers work within. Improvisation is an artistic expression of the musicians and brings out the emotional and dynamic natures of Jazz music (2). All improvised solos are musical interactions with the moment and therefore are local to the moment making Jazz very exciting to listen to especially during live performances. However, since improvisation constructed of jazz language is the focus of most jazz performances, listeners who are unfamiliar with its musical vocabulary may not appreciate the music. Improvisation brings energy and excitement to Jazz but at the same time, it can raise the learning curve for the listeners and ironically hinder the coherence of the music. In a sense, improvisation inadvertently makes jazz an elitist music where only those with advanced musical understand can decipher as music.
I am in debt to jazz that has guided me towards a musical path. Jazz will continue to be at my roots and I hope I can contribute to jazz by finding a way to flatten its learning curve without sacrificing the art.
