Adoption History

[edit]

Kangi, I'm transcluding our adoption history below. This way we can keep everything centralized. Use the "Edit this subpage" button to add comments, and then click the "advise xenocidic" link and follow the instructions to let me know when you make updates. Feel free to let me know if anything is unclear! xenocidic (talk) 00:36, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Offering Adoption

[edit]

Hey there! I saw your comments here and then I noticed you were still seeking adoption. Anyhow, I'm pretty active and hopefully should be answer any questions (or find the answers to the ones I can't). Let me know on my talk page if you're interested. xenocidic (talk) 01:07, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Oh, Lord! Many, many warm thanks for your adoption offer. I sure do accept it. What's the next step?
I promise to do my best not to bother you with stupid questions… Have a nice day!
Cordially, ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 08:50, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Wiki-adopted

[edit]

Done. I've changed the userbox on your page to show that you've been wikiadopted.

Stunt - picture 2: Blatant advertising?

[edit]

Would you tell me whether this image:Stunt_1298471366.jpg cannot be considered as 'blatant advertising', not the least because it shows more of ads for a well-known bank in Western France and a controversial retail store and e-commerce chain than a stunt performer.

  • I wouldn't call it blatant but if you think you have better images, you are free to be bold and replace them. xenocidic (talk) 12:56, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Because of this, the poor quality of the first picture and because some more would give a more visually informative and nicer page, I would have proposed the following (minimum) gallery — or even look for four more, showing also air and sea):

  • I think you should go ahead with this as long as the images are free to use. If there is resistance to the change then you can discuss it on the talk page. xenocidic (talk) 12:56, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
You're quite right: I'll find four more pics to cover (roughly) the range of stunts and explain on the talk page why I replaced those two poor images.
  • When I wrote it was blatant ads, that's because this region, Brittany, cause that's where my son studies, some 15 mi from Landrévarzec actually, and that's not far, too, from where my former wife lives. The Centres Leclerc can be compared to Wall✭Marts at some point (e.g. because of their social and salary policies), plus a populist, gross CEO who pisses off everyone with thunderous statements and vain promises. These are facts, not personal point of views, though I dislike such persons, be they politicians or whatever else. ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 09:15, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
  • If I try to improve the interlanguage links, I fear I'll be considered a vandal (as I do not intend to create an account on each version), but I'll correct the gross Duplo link (from the Portuguese Wiki), add a link from the Czech and Turkish versions — or is there any accredited administrator to do that job? ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 09:15, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
  • As long as your edits are in good faith you likely won't be considered a vandal. xenocidic (talk) 13:00, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Nice work! xenocidic (talk) 13:00, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi! I'm back home. Could you please take a look at the IJmuiden's talk page (about the concerns I expressed about copy-pasted text — sometimes word for word — from this website (the text under their map). Thanks to you! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 11:30, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Welcome back! In concerns like this, there's a few things you need to look for. The first would be any indication that the source may have released the text into the public domain or if it is indeed copyrighted with all rights reserved (I'm having trouble determining this because .co.uk is firewalled from work and I'm looking at the webpage through a proxy). The second would be to ensure that it was Wikipedia that copied the text from the website, and not the other way around. Looking at this edit, we can be almost certain that the IP user did a copy and paste from the website (otherwise the text would have gradually evolved into this form). So, I think we've determined that it's most likely copyright violation. Now there's a number of options, you could email the owner of the website and ask for permission to use the text, or you could paraphrase the text and use the website as a reference. Or you could of course just remove the text altogether, but this is a less than optimal course of action. Let me know if anything needs further clarification. xenocidic ( talk ¿ review ) 13:25, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
➨ I got no answer yet from the webmaster… ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 16:09, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, I've just added a comparison table to my message on the talk page after I read your message — actually, your message and my edit were sent at the same time —, this will allow… some comparison. I do agree with you when you write «it's most likely copyright violation». I wouldn't be satisfied with the third option, but I'm not sure we'll be granted permission to use their text Though the initial author and our 70.106.99.150 (who only wrote about IJmuiden) could be the same person, but I seriously have some doubts about it., at least because it may have been written by some reclamebureau / agence de communication. And if this text comes from the company itself, they would agree indeed, but then this would be some kind of advertising (and the inhab. figures are false).
I reworked a bit the existing text, pending translation from Dutch and other versions and some more research, when I'll have some more time…
Oh! Yet something else: What do «.co.uk is firewalled from work» and «looking at the webpage through a proxy»? And what does the ¿ between talk and review in your signature mean? Remember, I'm a real HTML-dumb… ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 14:21, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Firewall means that my work blocks access to websites ending in co.uk. Looking through a proxy means I used a website (http://www.stealthfinder.com) to get around this (but it doesn't work very well). We can still use the text, paraphrased, if we link to the website as a reference. The upside down question mark is just a seperator between the two links, it doesn't mean anything, just a neat symbol =). xenocidic ( talk ¿ review ) 14:27, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Those TOOLS I do need

[edit]

Toolbox

[edit]

Hi, proud Dad of this beautiful Ayden No kidding here, really !

  • Thank you =) He's getting pretty mischievous these days, though! =) xenocidic (talk) 15:34, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

As I'd better ask about them one by one, here is the first of a (long) series of questions about 'technical enigmas' (for me…): how can I customize the “toolbox” we have just below the edit window. I do not need Cyrillic, Greek and IPA scripts and most of the Latin letters (I have non-virtual keyboards for this), but need e.g. mkhedruli alphabet and, most of all, those </br>, <small></small> and others.
Furthermore, is it possible to add to this toolbox templates and some infoboxes I often use?
Have a nice day! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 15:15, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

  • On this one again, I have no idea. I would gather perhaps there might be some playing around you could do in your monobook.js with adding scripts and stuff. I would suggest you ask this question at the Village pump (technical) help desk of Wikipedia. As far as the infoboxes, you can see what I've done here with various infoboxes I use often, for easy cutting and pasting purposes. xenocidic (talk) 15:34, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Done. I've asked the Village pump (technical) help desk.
➨ Er… What's a monobook.js and how does it work (if it's meant to work)?
Monobook is where we can add scripts and such to our Wikipedia experience. See Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts. xenocidic (talk) 18:17, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
➨ Uh? It'll take some time before I can understand how your infoboxes (and others, by the way) work, too… So dumb! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 16:09, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
The freqtext is fairly easy. You type the most commonly used code you will be using onto a page and wrap it with <pre> </pre> tags so that Wikipedia doesn't render it as the code, but shows the code itself. Let me know if you need this explained further. =) xenocidic (talk) 18:17, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
I am really sorry to wear your patience… I don't even know what a freqtext is, where you find it, and where you type which kind of codes… ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 14:48, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
No, not at all, I was unclear. I have a page called User:Xenocidic/misc which is a where I keep all my frequently used text, which I then transclude on my main page. In the very basic form, you would just create a page (or you could even type this text onto your main user page) as follows:

<pre>

(here is where you would paste the frequently used text you want to access, I'll just use a ref template for an example)

</pre>

I hope that is more clear. Basically when you use a <pre>, it tells Wikipedia to ignore whatever Wikipedia and HTML code may be between the two tags (<pre> and </pre>) so that you can then use it to copy-paste it when you are frequently using it. Make more sense? P.S. I replied to your email. xenocidic (talk) 15:48, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Done I'd like to know whether I may review the articles about Koktebel and Sudak, including moving the latter Sudaq, to conform to its official Crimean name and pronunciation. These places are described by people (including Don Alessandro I do appreciate) who sure love them, but who see these (and others by the way) like tourists do.
See you later, Administrator! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 08:32, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

I won't have the time to do the planned edits (Köktöbel, Sudaq), cause I can't have 72 hours hold in a day, but I'd do them later. ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 10:18, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
I already asked you about moving Sudak to Sudaq, but I'd have to ask you too about KoktebelKöktöbel, just for the same reason. I read a whole lot of lines and pages about spelling guidelines, that is too much for me to get a clear idea whether I can do it or not. With a subsequent redirection, this may be no problem. I read on some talk pages about this topic that a bunch of people use Google as a notability criterion, which is totally stupid when we talk about some 630,000 Crimean Tatar speakers with few PCs (according to the 2001/2005 census made in Crimea & Ukraine, O`zbekiston, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria plus an unprecise number in the US, Canada, Russia and Qazaqstan — not 400,000,like they say in the Crimean Tatar language article) versus more than one million English-speakers with no E-equipment problems.
Oh, deer, wish there were no misstakes in theese lines, this thyme…

✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 15:35, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

^^hehe, thyme. Let me review this particular situation tommorow, when I have more time to review guidelines. However right off the bat I'd probably say on the en.wiki, it's probbly best not to have accents in the place names. P.S., Thanks for the barnstar! It's funny, you gave it to me just as I was completely overhauling my barnstar page. –xenocidic (talk) 16:12, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Done Having reviewed the relevant guideline, it seems that the common English name should be used (as this is the en.wiki), but I would encourage you to create a redirect from the customary Crimean spelling to articles. –xenocidic (talk) 13:48, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

I added redirections from KöktöbelKoktebel and from SudaqSudak, wishing I did nothing wrong… And as a warmup, before I rewrite the Gothenburg Archipelago article (tomorrow), I reviewed the history section of Sudaq. Could you please check that there are no flaws somewhere? Thanks to you! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 17:15, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
The redirects are good. So is the addition to the Sudaq article, I did some copy editing.

Done Questions - "The Venetians also came to Sudaq at the beginning of the 13th century to take their share," (take their share? can we find a better term? lay claim? something like that...) and "The present status of the town has been acquired in 1982." (acquired by whom?). –xeno (talk) 17:31, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

➨ You're quite right — reworded a bit (I stupidly translated from Russian and Ukrainian, without adaptation)
xeno: so now, my adopter is just an alien? Wow, didn't know I could communicate with Aliens (unless those I met on the Mexico-US or “Fortress Europe” borders…)!
:-( Sad you bowed under pressure. The kind of things I dislike here… ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 10:40, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
Well, my name is still xenocidic, but I just changed my signature... Since there's people who might translate it literally, and I'd rather not people to think I am some kind of xenophobe. =) I haven't written a disclaimer about my name yet, maybe after I do, I'll change my signature back... –xeno (talk) 18:30, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

I took a look at the Cabair article, with its bunch of , , (6 lines/3 flags vs. 40-something words). This aviation group is sure not notable in Tulsa, OK or Richmond, BC, but this is really an important part of the skyline in the UK and Spain (several clubs and flying schools, helicopter transportation and mid-level maintenance activities are not even mentioned).
The question is: Is it worth for me to review this article [1], if someone is to delete the article soon after?
Cheers! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 10:18, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

  1. ^ I may admit that I wrote a coverage about them two years ago and had a helo refresher course with them, but I'd do that job independently, and only use materials which are available online.
It's definitely worth it to improve the article, specifically you should try and explain why it is notable, and add citations. If you solve those two issues, it surely won't be deleted. –xenocidic (talk) 13:48, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Those customized items

[edit]

Hi! Though I admit this is a rather childish caprice I have, I'd like to have some customized devices and signature. Would you have the time to explain to me how:

  • I could display indicators looking like your Status: Offline. , — Status: Online. , — Status: Around. ?
  • I could customize my signature.

PS: I haven't managed yet to apply the instructions about Those tools I do need
Many thanks for being patient with me. ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 10:36, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

The status thing, I can design easily enough for you - it is probably easier for me to simply create it rather than explain it, because it took me several weeks myself to understand how these things work. As far as the signature, that is also easy enough, though you're not really supposed to have pictures in your signature. The font, and two colours are fine though. Something like this (just change the colours or move them around - a lot of people with two words in their name will just skip the "talk" icon and put a link to talk in their second name - it's your choice): <font face="Textile Regular" color="blue">✓ Kanġi</font> <font face="Textile Regular" color="red">Oĥanko</font> = ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko. –xenocidic (talk) 13:48, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
  • OK, I made it for you. You can see the code here: User talk:Kanġi Oĥanko/Status, and you change the status here: User:Kanġi Oĥanko/Status. Right now it is somewhat compatible with "WP:QUI", but this program requires you to be running Firefox (not Internet Explorer). Qui will help you set your status easily. If you can't use this addon, then you can simply change the statuses manually. Because it is compatible with Qui when you set Qui to sleep, it will show you as spinning around. "notbusy" (twiddling thumbs) must be set manually because Qui only supports four statuses. The other statuses are online (here there overthere), busy (...but quite busy), and offline. If you're going to be manually setting your status only, you can change the switches in the status code here. let me know if any of this needs explaining. cheers, –xenocidic (talk) 14:09, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
Not surprisingly, I did not succeed, neither with the status thing, nor the signature —
  • Signature - Here is what I wrote in the signature box: <font color=#000099>ꇇ</font> <font face="Textile Regular" color=#660000>Kanġi Oĥanko</font> (I don't mind about the “talk”), with or without [[]], raw or checked, and I got, weeeell… You won! NOTHING!! (The syllable looks rather like what I was looking for and it is spelt lot, which suits me, as this means in some Slavic languages “flying”)
What was the error message you got? Try this: <font color="#000099">ꇇ</font> <font face="Textile Regular" color="#660000">Kanġi Oĥanko</font> <font face="Textile Regular">(<font face="Textile Regular"talk</font>)</font> = Kanġi Oĥanko (talk).
➨ Here is what I tried on another edition <span style="font-family:Textile"><span style="color:DimGray">✓</span> <span style="color:LightSeaGreen">username - signature</span> <span style="color:Orange">D</span></span> (all without square brackets). It worked — partly: First, the date and time are also affected by the font as they appear in “Textile”; Then, there is the problem that the number of characters seems to be limited
  • Status - I read FIVE times what you told me, listened to the DJ Qui, got back to your explanation, and there was only one word in my mouth: uh?!

As only four items can be set into the status machine, this suits me best:

    •  round here, there or over there twiddling my thumbs
    •  round here, there or over there — but rather busy
    •  spinning around with very few spare time (another spinning animated image would be better, but I didn't find one)
    •  Away offline
But, please, could you do it for me, or explain (step by step, of course) what I will have to do then?
Once again, many, many thanks…
By the way, I have to get back home now (a 3 hr drive), and I'll be effectively offline in a few minutes. ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 15:35, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
First - are you using the Mozilla Firefox browser? If not, you should install it. It's free, and much better than Internet Explorer. Second, you need to copy and paste this line: importScript('User:TheDJ/qui.js'); into Special:Mypage/monobook.js, and then press CTRL-Reload to bypass your cache. and then you will see a little dot in the top right corner, you can set yourself to online, busy, sleep (which will actually mean spinning around) and offline. Or, if you can't do all that, you can just change the word in User:Kanġi Oĥanko to whatever your status is, be it "online", "busy", "sleep" or "offline". does that help? –xenocidic (talk) 16:12, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Kangi, you may have noticed that I moved the adoption subpage to User talk:Kanġi Oĥanko/Adoption; this is just because I have way too many subpages and am trying to trim it down. Nothing will change, and all the links have been updated and I now transclude your page to my page, instead of the other way around. Hope all is well, –xenocidic (talk) 14:18, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi! Could you have a look at Gothenburg Archipelago and Southern Gothenburg Archipelago. Ciao, привіт, hej då, bye! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 10:35, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

You'll have to explain this one for me, I took a look at everything and I'm still not sure what you want done... I think you want one single article covering the archipelago. Once I know that I can do the necessary moves to preserve all the history and such.
P.S. This word "archipelago", it is the word I hate most in the English language. But don't worry about that. –xenocidic (talk) 13:07, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

The translation from Swedish for the whole of Gothenburg Archipelago is ready to be inserted [1]. Awaiting what should be done to conform to the usual guidelines, I posted again the underconstruction banner both ahead of Gothenburg Archipelago and Southern Gothenburg Archipelago [2], wishing they will remain there till I've finished.
➠ «What should be done» — I'm not sure (I'm a dumb, you're an admin), but I guess that both articles should be merged under one title: Gothenburg Archipelago, as there is absolutely no solid reason [3] to distinguish “one” from “the other”. The Swedish don't, and when you sail across these islands, you have to watch your map and nav means to know where's this “dividing line” — it's not some Equator!
Cheers! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 23:08, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
I've merged the histories of the two articles, so go ahead and paste the new article on top of it. –xeno (talk) 23:45, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Starting now — hope I'll have finished the essential part of it today (but there will be things to be added, edited, removed [4] and reworked).
I'd like to rework the map, so that the name of the islands and main villages appear, but I do not know how to use SVG tools, how to upload a file into Wikicommons, which license is appropriate, etc. [5]
Hej då! ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 10:40, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Uploading to the commons is pretty easy, just go to commons:Special:Upload. GFDL-self is usually a pretty appropriate license as well. As for SVG tools...Not sure what that is - graphics have never been my area of expertise. –xeno (talk) 18:28, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
  1. ^ As there is much more to say about this archipelago, I would complete it when I'll have some time later, after I will have written what is already planned (all that above and other items on my to-do list). I'll keep momentarily the present references given in the Southern Gothenburg Archipelago article about the three sagor in old Norse, but I'll check also later whether they are really relevant. Not sure.
  2. ^ «This word "archipelago" is the word I hate most in the English language»: I dislike it, too, less for the way it sounds than for the fact ο αρχιπέλαγος originally designated the Aegean Sea (etymology: άρχων - leading, main, first, and πέλαγος - offshore). The Scandinavian have a nicer word: the old Norse skergarðr survived in Icelandic as skerjagarður, Faroese skergarð, bokmål Norwegian skjærgård, nynorsk Norwegian skjergard, Danish skærgård and Swedish skärgård — i.e. a “rock garden” or “rock yard”. Much more poetic! But I have to stick to the usage and give this skärgård as an ˌärkəˈpeləˌgō
  3. ^ E.g. political, geological, historical or God-only-knowzical…
  4. ^ Namely those old Norse references: I wonder if it is of any interest to have pure litterature (and how many people round here can read old Norse round here?), unless you add much more like this…
  5. ^ As usual, I didn't understand what I read…

Maps the Crimean way

[edit]

There's something I'd like to understand — if you can explain this to me: if you take a look at any map on the Crimean Tatar edition (e.g. the one appearing on the lower part of the Sudaq şeer şurası (Sudaq town council), under the title «Qırım haritasında Sudaq regionı»: I cannot see where the codes allowing the names to be correctly positionned are and I wasn't able to locate the and templates anywhere on the Crimean VİKİPEDİYA.
But if it's too complicated for me (this may well be the case), forget about it! There are so many things here I don't understand, anyway (see much of the explanations given here)… ✓ Kanġi Oĥanko (talk) 10:40, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

The code for the placement of those links is within this template: . But... it is well beyond my technical know-how, so I think we might have to find someone to help us if you want to do something special like that here. or, you could copy that template over here and translate it... (To find those templates you'll have to prefix them with "Template:" or the crh word which is I guess, "Şablon". –xeno (talk) 18:23, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
P.S., I tried to find you over there, to leave you a message, but I guess you use a different username? Are you aware of the Single unified login feature? –xeno (talk) 19:01, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
