Swakopmund
[edit]True to its German traditions early mornings and evenings in Swakopmund can be cold throughout the year, as the cold Atlantic Ocean meeting the Namib Desert creates a fog bank. This coolness is often a relief from the heat of the rest of Namibia, but does mean that Swakopmund is not the tropical sunbathing mecca that most people imagine.[1]
There is a great variety of accommodation in Swakopmund which cater for all tastes and budgets. It should be noted that these establishments will definitely need to be booked in advance especially if you are travelling in the busy December holidays.
Bird lovers can pay a visit to the Swakopmund Salt Works or the Walvis Bay Lagoon, which in season is frequented by thousands of flamingos.
Swakopmund was founded two years later than Windhoek, in 1892, by Captain Curt von Francois as the main harbour of German South West Africa. Increased traffic between Germany and its colony necessitated establishing of own port as Walvis Bay, located 33 kilometres south, was already in British possession. [2]
Swakopmund is a very small town where most of the people have no difficulty walking to town. D.R.C is the location where the disadvantaged reside, it is on the outskirts of Swakopmund and people that stay there suffer alot.
Swakopmund has a newly built mall, having shops like nandos ,fruit & vegetable and mathilda,s take away. It is a very pleasant holiday destination and I encourage everybody to visit the desert town.
Some of the high schools in Swakopmund are Swakopmund secondary school, Namib high school, Westside High school and Coastal High school.
