Mr. Trump was of draft age during the Vietnam Conflict. In an interview in 2011 on New York station WNYW [1] he stated "I actually got lucky because I had a very high draft number."[2] Selective Service records retrieved by "thesmokinggun.com" from NARA records show, however that although Trump did eventually receive a high selective service lottery number, the principle reason for his not being drafted was his receipt of student deferments (2-S) while attending college and the receipt of a medical deferment (1-Y later converted to 4-F) prior to the lottery to which he referred. [3]

“I doubt it was a serious medical issue,” Trump biographer Wayne Barrett, author of “Trump: The Deals and the Downfall,” told the Daily News Monday. [4]

Trump was not drafted during the Vietnam War.[1] While in college from 1964 to 1968, he obtained four student deferments.[2] In 1966, he was deemed fit for service based upon a military medical examination, and in 1968 was briefly classified as fit by a local draft board, but was given a 1-Y medical deferment in October 1968.[3] In an interview for a 2015 biography, Trump attributed his medical deferment to heel spurs.[4] "Because of his medical exemption, his lottery number would have been irrelevant, said Richard Flahavan, a spokesman for the Selective Service System, who has worked for the agency for three decades."[5][3][6]

Because of his medical exemption, his lottery number would have been irrelevant, said Richard Flahavan, a spokesman for the Selective Service System, who has worked for the agency for three decades....Still, Mr. Trump, in the interviews, said he believed he could have been subject to another physical exam to check on his bone spurs, had his draft number been called. 'I would have had to go eventually because that was a minor medical....' But the publicly available draft records of Mr. Trump include the letters 'DISQ' next to his exam date, with no notation indicating that he would be re-examined.
