User:Dennis Brown/The malaise speech
The malaise speech (also known as the Address to the Nation on Energy and National Goals and Crisis of Confidence speech) is the popular name given to a speech made by President Jimmy Carter during his tenure in office, on July 15, 1979. He never actually used the word "malaise" and why this speech is more often referred to as the malaise speech is not fully clear. The speech was popular at the time, generating a 11 point jump in his popularity ratings. [1]
Planning
[edit]The speech was originally planned to be given on July 4 [2] but it was postponed while Carter spent 11 days the presidential restreat, Camp David in Maryland. He was joined by a number of religious and business leaders, plus politicians and others. [3]
