Tema Secondary School is one of the best senior high schools in Ghana. It is a coeducational second-cycle institution within the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. Tema Senior High School has both day and boarding facilities which accommodates students from both far and near towns who aspire to achieve greater heights in the field of academia. It is located in Tema Community five[1].

History

Tema Senior School was established 59 years ago and commissioned on 22nd September 1961 by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. After it was commissioned, the school started functioning and admitting students immediately on 22nd of September 1969. It commenced with 52 students however, the number of students increased to 105 by the end of the month. The first Headmaster of the school is a renowned historian, writer, educationist and a former politician, Mr. F. K. Buah. The school’s first Assembly Hall has been named after him[2].

About the School

The school accommodates both male and female students. The motto for the school is in Latin, that is, “Nil Nissi Optima” which means “Nothing but the Best” in English. It is usually known to many in Ghana as “Temasco” which is the corrupt form of Tema Secondary School. Tema Secondary school offers courses such as Business, General Science, General Arts, Visual Arts, Home Economics[3].

The current headmaster of the school is Mr Emmanuel Ofoe Fiamewhle. According to Mr. Fiamewhle, the school had a total population of 2,435 students made up of 1,088 boys and 1347 girls, 161 teaching and 68 non-teaching staff as of 2019[4].

The Headteachers of the Tema Secondary School since its commissioning in 1961 till date includes; Dr. F. K. Boah, Mr. K. A. Yirenkyi, Mr. E. L. A. Lamptey, Mr. W. K. Agbelie, Mr. A. K. Agyapong, Mr. E. Owusu-Ansah, Mrs. Victoria Opoku, Mrs. Eunice Naadu Quansah, Mrs. Elizabeth Ama Asare and Mr. Emmanuel Ofoe Fiamewhle(incumbent 2020).

House One - this house is usually associated with color red

House Two - popularly called 'The Blues' as it is associated with the blue color

House Three - popularly called 'Jubilee House'. It is associated with the yellow color

House Four - popularly known as 'Alema House'. it is associated with the green color

Achievements

It is the oldest senior high school in the tema Metropolis[5].

The overall best student in the 2019 West Africa Senior High School Certificate Examination was student of TEMASCO with 6A1s, a B2 and C4. He is Master Theophilus Okpoti Charway, a Business student[6].

Tema Secondary School became third (3rd) at the Regional performance league in 2014/2015 WASSCE. Again, the school won the Best School performance and Environmental Cleanliness Award at the National Best Teacher Award in Tamale[7].

The school was also selected to participate in a National Science and Maths Quiz in Legon[8].

It is the only school in zone 4 offering Badminton and Hockey for now. It won zone 4 Inter schools’ sports (Games)[9].

The school has one of the best administration blocks among the secondary cycle institutions in the country as well as the whole of West Africa[10].
