The Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) is an agency of the Nigerian Ministry of Agriculture[2] . NAQS is charged with safegaurding the country against the entry and spread of foreign pests and diseases of plant. It also monitors the quality of animal and aquatic resources and products brought into the country. It ensures sanitary protocols are followed in the import and export of agricultural products.[3]
Protection of Wild-Life: NAQS implements wildlife quarantine policies to control the spread of diseases[4]
Issuance of Plant Health or Phytosanitary Certificates (PC): It monitors and ensures that infested plants are not exported, as well as preventing the incursion of pests.[2]
Pest and Disease SurveillanceThe NAQs monitors pests and diseases, and uses different measures to achieve the goal of protecting Nigeria's agricultural economy.[5]
Monitoring the quality of geneticallly modified crops The NAQS contributes to Nigeria's bio-safety by carrying out phytosanitary inspections on genetically modified crops.[6]
In 2016, a bill was passed by the senate seeking to prevent the spread of diseases by monitoring the movement of animals regionally and internationally. [8] NAQS is established pursuant to the NIGERIA AGRICULTURAL QUARANTINE SERVICE (ESTABLISHMENT) ACT, 2018 [9] The Act stipulates its members, duties and other miscellaneous functions.[7]
