The NIH Public Access Policy is a set of guidelines issued by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2008 regarding the dissemination of scholarly articles resulting from NIH-funded research. Specifically, it requires a final version of such articles to be deposited in a dedicated repository, no later than 12 months after the date of publication. PubMed Central was set up by the NIH's National Center for Biotechnology Information to accommodate such archival versions.
