Censuses of the Swedish poplulation are performed by two independant government agencies: Statistics Sweden (Swedish: Statistiska centralbyrån, SCB), and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (Swedish: Sveriges Kommuner och Landsting, SKL)
This page shows a number of different counts, to give a fairer picture of overall population. Each count has its flaws, such as the urban area count which splits Gothenburg proper into at least 3 different urbanities along rivers; as well as splitting Stockholm into at least two separate urbanities. The division of what is considered a city and what isn't is also political, with longer distances to cross between north to south of the Stockholm municipality than between Malmö and Lund. The differences in size between largest and smallest municipality are ~2,338 times, and between those included in this list of major cities as defined by SKL: ~24,3x, which affects the statistics significantly. In addition the Swedish-Danish border divides the Öresund region, sometimes referred to as the Greater Copenhagen Region,[1][2] which includes 3,583,842 inhabitants, making it nearly twice the size of the Greater Stockholm Region.

Notes
[edit]- a.^ Multiple definitions of metropolitan area exist, this one includes beyond strictly "suburbs" also municipalities with significant commuter activity as defined by SKL. Certain municipalities such as Tranås lie between two cities and lesser commuting activity occurs to both, in this case Jönköping and Linköping. It is only included in one of the areas, namely Jönköping, but still as a major commuting area.
- b.^ The greater metropolitan area is defined as including suburbs or municipalities with a lesser degree of commuter activity.
- c.^ The regional metropolitan area is defined as including also suburbs or municipalities with significant commuter activity to suburbs or municipalities with significant commuter activity.
- d.^ There is some overlap with Kävlinge considered to be a suburb of both Lund and Malmö. SKL includes Kävlinge as a suburb to a Large city, of which only Malmö is one, despite more commuting to Lund. Without Kävling, Greater Malmö has 493700 inhabitants, while Greater-Lund with Kävlinge has 227100 inhabitants.
- e.^ Svalöv, which is designated a commuting municipality to Landskrona is included by SKL as a suburb of a major city, which in the region only includes Helsingborg. Therefor it is included in Helsingborgs metropolitan area. Without Svalöv; Helsingborg metropolitan area includes 308000 inhabitants.
- f.^ Note that some regions occur several times, such as the Stockholms/Södertälje and Malmö/Lund/Trelleborg region. Note also that Falkenberg/Varberg 105753, Uddevalla 136565, Kristianstad 110222, Kalmar/Nybro 129139; are not included, despite being larger than included regions. None of their cities are considered major cities by SKL.
