Dalarna University College (Swedish: Högskolan Dalarna) is a public university (högskola) located in Falun and Borlänge, in Dalarna County, Sweden,[3] about 200 km north-west of Stockholm.
The university has 5 555 FTE (full-time equivalent) students (or 14 109 individual students).[1]
History
[edit]Dalarna University has its roots in the 1822 establishment of Bergsskolan in Falun, the first educational institution for engineering in Sweden.[4] In 1864, the school pastor in the Dalarna community of Stora Tuna started what may have been Sweden’s first facility for the training of early-year school teachers[4]. Thirty years later in 1894, a training facility for nurses opened in the region[4].
A natural continuation of these developments was the much later establishment in 1977 of the university under the name Högskolan i Falun/Borlänge, which came as a result of government reforms to higher education (Högskolereformen) in Sweden. On January 1, 1996, the government decreed that the university henceforth be called Högskolan Dalarna.

Campus
[edit]Currently, the university has two campuses: one in the town of Borlänge and one in the town of Falun. The distance between the two towns is about 20 kilometres.
In 1982, the university moved to the premises of the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) in Borlänge.
In 1991/1992, the university moved into new premises in both Borlänge and Falun. In 1994, Vårdhögskolan (the nursing college) moved into the university’s Falun premises and by the year 2000, nursing programmes were under the authority of the university.
In 2014, the new university library opened at Campus Falun and that same year was awarded the prize for the world’s best university building (Dalarna media Library by ADEPT ) at the World Architecture Festival held in Singapore.[5]
In October 2019, the decision was made by the University Governing Board to move Campus Borlänge from its present location to central Borlänge and the building known as Liljanhuset.
The campus in Falun is located next to the sports complex Lugnet, where a number of international skiing competitions and other sporting events are held.
Student Housing
[edit]Student housing is available off campus in both Borlänge and Falun. The main student accommodation in Borlänge is called Locus and the main student accommodation in Falun is called Britsen. [6] They are owned by Tunabyggen and Kopparstaden, respectively. Most student accommodation is located within walking distance from both the campus and the town centre, both in Borlänge and in Falun.
Education
[edit]Dalarna University offers 72 programmes: 51 are Bachelor's programmes and 21 are Master's programmes.[1]. It also offers more than 1,000 freestanding courses. Eleven Master's programmes and one Bachelor's programme are taught entirely in English.[7]
Research
[edit]Research at Dalarna University is organised into six so-called research profiles:[8]
- Microdata Analysis
- Health and Welfare
- Education and Learning
- Intercultural Studies
- Energy and Built Environments
- Steel Forming and Surface Engineering
The research within these profiles is mostly applied and generally conducted in collaboration with external organisations within business and industry, as well as with public organisations.
Dalarna University is qualified to award doctoral degrees in the fields of Health and Welfare with Focus on Evidence-Based Practice; Microdata Analysis; and Educational Work, following assessment by The Swedish National Agency for Higher Education. The university has 63 doctoral students (2018).[1]
Organisation
[edit]The university has three schools: The School of Technology and Business Studies, which is located in Borlänge; and the School of Humanities and Media Studies and the School of Education, Health and Social Studies, which are located in Falun.[9]
Vision
[edit]In December 2014, the University Governing Board approved and finalised the new vision for Dalarna University. The vision comprises three sections: Our Commitment, Our Values, Our Vision.[10]
- Our Commitment – We create open pathways to knowledge for a good society.
- Our Values – Openness, Courage, Responsibility.
- Our Vision – We co-create self-formation, education and research in Dalarna and in the world.
Student Union
[edit]The student union at Dalarna University is called Dalarnas studentkår[11], the result of a merger between the student union in Borlänge and the student union in Falun. It has a student union building in both Borlänge and Falun. Tenoren , the student union building in Borlänge, houses a restaurant and pub. The student union building in Falun is called Studenternas hus Kåre and houses student union offices, a disco and a pub.
Symbols
[edit]Dalarna University has adopted the bellflower (Campanula patula) as its symbol, and the colour of the flower is used in the university’s graphic profile.
The university has its own marsch – a musical composition by the fiddle player Ola Bäckström – which is often performed at the various events held at Dalarna University, such as the Welcome Ceremony for new students and the Academic Ceremony that celebrates the achievements and promotion of university staff.
