Culture Critic assessed critical response as an aggregated score of 80% based on British press reviews.[2] On The Omnivore, based on British and American press reviews, the book received an "omniscore" of 4.0 out of 5.[3] On Bookmarks January/February 2015 issue, a magazine that aggregates critic reviews of books, the book received a (3.5 out of 5) based on critic reviews with a critical summary saying, "These stories may not appeal to as wide an audience as her Cromwell trilogy," notes the San Francisco Chronicle, "but those who love her darker and more playful works are likely to be both bewitched and delighted".[4]
