Documentation I think that all you really need is simple instructions for how to post this to a user's talk page. If you want me to help you make this, I can. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:52, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Also I'm adding this to my watchlist. I have work now but I'll be back tonight. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:53, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@The ed17:.. Check the template now and patrol the page please. Herald 13:46, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Herald, I've made a couple tweaks but it looks great to me! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 22:09, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@The ed17:,@Pine:,@Adam Cuerden:,..Would you guys consider to welcome more users via this..??Herald 14:15, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ed is the one to ask. Eventually I hope WMF will produce a combined newsletter subscription management tool. --Pine 07:27, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm fine with using it to welcome/invite users. :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan]

Usage circumstances?

[edit]

@Chris troutman, @EpicPupper, and @Mjroots: you all collectively rescued this template from deletion earlier this month, but your replies to @Pppery don't give any guidance on when it'd actually be used. If someone's a true newcomer, then telling them about the Signpost isn't the most important piece of information to convey, so this isn't really a normal welcome template. And if they're not a newcomer, they're probably already aware of the Signpost, and inviting them to subscribe at that point would come across as a bit random/pushy. If it has some other purpose that's not clear, that should be added to the documentation. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 19:10, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This has gone exactly as I suspected: it still has not been used since 2014 despite everyone claiming "there must be use cases". Such reactionary responses almost never work and should have been ignored; the fact that a template has fallen out of use for eight years is in itself evidence that it is not useful. * Pppery * it has begun... 19:13, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I never promised to use this welcome template. I decried the poor rationale for deletion. What exactly is gained by deleting a template no longer used? Does it give you a feeling of satisfaction? It seems to me the code is a tool which could be used again, if not for another 10 years. Does all content have to be useful in order to exist here? Does harassing editors with whom you disagree make you happier? Did I prevent your joy by refusing the deletion rationale? What exactly do you think you're going to do about it? Let's take the temperature down a notch or two here. How strictly we should be cleaning up unused templates is an open question, and one probably best considered in a wider venue. But for here, all we're concerned with is this particular template. It'd be nice if we could come to some agreement on appropriate usage, but if not, we can just leave it be and carry on with our editing elsewhere and leave it up to future editors whether or not to delete it. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 21:08, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
