Template format

[edit]

A few comments on the template format:

  1. |title='''title''' is non-standard, redundant, and problematic due to the double bolding effect. the css class used for the title in {{navbox}} already includes font-weight:bold, so by adding additional bold markup, this can cause hte double bolding effect in Windows 7. this has been discussed at MediaWiki talk:Common.css
  2. to include a category in the transcluding articles, it should be wrapped in {{main other}}, since it will otherwise place any transcluding page in that category, some of which may not be articles. for example, if the template is transcluded in userspace or on a talk page, we don't want the userpage or talk page to be in the category. in fact, the navigational box should not be adding categories at all per WP:TEMPLATECAT.
  3. we should use WP:HLIST to generate bullet delimited lists whenever possible for accessibility. the use of hardcoded middots causes problems for screen readers, which read them as dots. by using WP:HLIST the contents is parsed as a list, which is well understood by screen readers.
please feel free to discuss here, since the change to WP:HLIST has now be reverted twice, and we should discuss why this particular template should be different from the vast majority. Frietjes (talk) 19:18, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
