What's that bit about "Petrobras atonement" in this sidebar? I'm guessing it's about a settlement or plea deal for some infraction, crime, or lawsuit, but I don't see the words atonement or settlement anywhere in the Operation Car Wash article. (Penalty doesn't appear, either.) Presumably, atonement came from the translation of something in the Portuguese article, and if I could see where it came from, I could reword it, but I'm loathe to just change it without knowing what it means or where it came from. don't change it on the basis of this guess, but I think it means fines. Penalties. They did pay fines to several different countries. I guess the way to check this would be t match the amounts. If I can do this as I go I will let you know. Meanwhile, it is also hard to be sure which of those items are in that category, vs restitution. Think it would be ok to put a line of space in there?Elinruby (talk) 09:19, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Elinruby: They are kind of penalties, and I found a source (Justice.gov) that supports that, with the one caveat that there seems to be a decimal-place difference, in that this source speaks of $853M, and the refs in the sidebar already (like note [4]), speak of $85.3M, which is very suspicious because of the exact factor of ten difference. So, still need to match these up, but yes, it seems to be penalties. I'm going to go ahead and change the label to say that, while we look further to validate it, because "Atonement" is definitely wrong, and makes no sense. It's a good example of the problems with this article. There are people on the talk page saying that they speak Portuguese but they seem oblivious to these sorts of issues (or, did you see my Cunha example?) I am pretty sure penalties is at least more accurate. Portuguese seems to share a Romance tendency to polite euphemism and complicated sentence structure. I don't usually create infoboxes. I don't remember doing this one, but since apparently I did, my thought is that I probably imported it from somewhere, likely the portuguese article, and fiddled with the markup -- which tends to vary from language to language -- until it displayed property. When battling the notability police over whether a given translation is notable, an infobox is usually seen as an argument for notability. Anyway, anyone that wants alter or improve the infobox has my blessing. Elinruby (talk) 19:34, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Elinruby: It wasn't you; the Infobox was added in in 2015 by the article creator themself in the fourth edit ever on the article, 20 minutes after they created the article. So basically, it's been there since the very beginning. One day later, they quit Wikipedia and never returned. Your first edit to the article wasn't until this one over a year later. did some line-by-line comparison and found that the Portuguese version lists many additional judges. References on that still need work, but I need a break. If anyone hates the format, specifically the repetition of "Judges", please feel free to fix. Elinruby (talk) 03:01, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I reworked the Judges section, specifying the type of judge and adding more links and {{ill}}s, and also the style. I also question whether anybody cares about the judges, that much, except for Moro, the first one, so I made the judges section default collapsed. Other changes: a slightly narrower box, horizontal dividers between major sections, and other style improvements. Mathglot (talk) 16:45, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
