NASA Astronaut Group 4

  • The current hook is very bland, as I believe that most readers tend to associate astronauts with science anyway, so many astronauts being scientists is pretty much a given. Can something better be proposed here? Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 02:25, 27 May 2019 (UTC)
Did you know that NASA Astronaut Group 4, selected in 1965 for the Apollo Moon program, was the first chosen primarily on the basis of scientific experience?
  • Perhaps something like (it needs reworded)
  • :... that in June 1965, NASA selected six scientists (five pictured) by waiving the requirement to be a pilot? Source: ""Scientist-Astronauts Join NASA Space Program""
  • Something about it being the first non-pilots to be selected might spice it up a bit. I do not like my wording, but perhaps someone can craft it a little better. Kees08 (Talk) 01:41, 28 May 2019 (UTC)
  • Did you know that NASA Astronaut Group 4, selected in 1965 for the Apollo Moon program, was the first recruited primarily on the basis of scientific experience? --Neopeius (talk) 02:26, 28 May 2019 (UTC)

Comment NASA selected a second group of scientist-astronauts in 1967, after which the idea was dropped. Starting in 1978, astronauts other than pilots were selected under the designation of mission specialist; but they are not necessarily or even usually scientists. Consider the latest lot for example. (And note that four are test pilots.) Hawkeye7 (discuss) 22:22, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

Putting Neopeius's suggestion below to fit DYK standards:
ALT ... that NASA Astronaut Group 4, selected in 1965 for the Apollo program, was the first recruited primarily on the basis of scientific experience?
Just waiting for Hawkeye's response, after which a full review will be done. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 10:34, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
It's fine with me if its fine with you. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 19:55, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
  • The article was promoted to GA status in the required time frame, and I didn't find any close paraphrasing. QPQ has been done. There are two main issues: the hook fact is only explicitly mentioned in the lead and lacks a citation, and there doesn't seem to be a footnote for the "qualifications" bullet-list. Of the hooks proposed, only Neopeius's suggestion is approved as it appears that is the one that has reached consensus. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:30, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
  • I never read the lead. Added a statement to that effect, with an appropriate footnote. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 07:31, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, should be good to go now. Striking other proposed hooks. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 08:39, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
