Xerez vs Jerez?

[edit]

Why is it Xerex CD but it's in Jerez? Why the different spelling? --AW (talk) 23:45, 28 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Spanish Wikipedia says it’s to respect the club’s predecessor, which was called Xerez Fútbol Club. The current club was originally know as Jerez Club Deportivo, but the name was changed in the 1960s. Regardles of the spelling both Xerez and Jerez are pronounced the same way, [xe'ɾeθ] (see Wikipedia:IPA for Spanish if you need help with the IPA symbols).
I don’t know why the original club was called the way it was as they were already in the modern times back then (maybe they thought it looks cool? :-)), but the word Xerez itself is the archaic form of Jerez. Originally x was pronounced [ʃ], but later on the sound evolved to a hard [x]. Nowadays the [x] is spelled with a j (or with a g if it’s before an e or an i), but x is still retained for some words, especially proper nouns. The most famous example probably is México ([ˈmexiko]), which according to modern rules would be and in fact sometimes is written as Méjico. –Kooma (di algo) 10:39, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I am from Jerez and I support Xerez CD, so I can explain you it. The city is called Jerez, but long time ago, it was called Sherish by the Moorish, and when the Catoholics reconquisted the city, the called it Xerez. The name of the club was firstly Jerez CD, but they decided to change it to Xerez CD as a tribute to the old name, to the old city. But in Spanish both sound the same, because the letter 'x' in Spanish has two ways to be said, one like 'j' (in Spanish the letter 'j' is different than in English) and the other like /ks/. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.39.57.252 (talk) 22:07, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A new section in history about La Liga

[edit]

Should there be written about the fact that other La Liga clubs have bought MANY of their football-players after they was promoted to La Liga? And also just about how they are doing in la liga. Maybe a new section. And you can seel what players they have sold, http://www.realmadrid.com/cs/Satellite/en/1202777307043/noticia/Noticia/Transfer_window.htm
