Anglophones vs Germans

[edit]

see also http://foldoc.org/foldoc/foldoc.cgi?query=wank&action=Search wank apparently has a less offensive meaning in other parts of the English speaking world — Preceding unsigned comment added by Horkana (talkcontribs) 22:40, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Eh, not precisely... That's a subculture term, and the entry explicitly notes that it's derived from the sexual meaning. Nentuaby 09:04, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I find it rather offensive that this article focusses on the purile English humour to be derived from the name rather than on the actual Bavarian community. Is it legitimate to discuss other cultures from such a blatantly anglophone perspective? And does the joke really have to be spelled out? How embarrassingly foolish this makes the English-speaking world seem. --Doric Loon 08:42, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think the point that Anglophones find it amusing and go there because of it is interesting enough to be in Wikipedia. Part of the fun of Wikipedia is information that's probably not necessary in a boring encyclopedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.9.125.229 (talk) 04:19, 9 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Only if you can prove that they really do go there, and that this amusement is not a phenomenon created (or largely created) within Wiki. We do now have an article Place names with English meanings, where the punning possibilities may be noted. --Doric Loon 08:23, 9 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've actually visited Wank, and ridden the Wankbahn, largely for the humorous photo opportunities; the extremely subtle reference to a climax isn't distracting, and still manages tof it the tone of the article. There's nothing overtly sexual or offensive about it, just a very well-hidden tongue-in-cheek joke. The article is still completely factual. Personal Robot Jesus (talk) 00:31, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You poor, sad person. Next time you travel, ask me for suggestions on some of the enriching things you actually could be looking out for.
The article has changed since I made that comment in 2006; there was nothing subtle about the text I objected to. But even a subtle laughing at other cultures (and what is more closely linked to our cultural identity than our place names?) is very offensive. If you don't see that, it's a problem with you. --Doric Loon (talk) 10:56, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Poor, sad person?" This isn't the place for flaming, Doric. I'm well aware of the other "enriching" cultural activities I could partake in while traveling in Germany, and I didn't make the trip to the region exclusively to visit Wank. There's nothing particularly offensive about noting inter-language puns. My Spanish friends find it hilarious, for example, that I once drove a Chevy Nova; it cracked them up that my vehicle "doesn't go" by translation. I'd say that place names aren't nearly as inextricably linked to cultural identities so much as the places themselves. The residents of Hell, Michigan find the punning possibilities an invaluable tool for tourism. Perhaps Wank should consider a similar business model. In any case, telling me via a Wiki Talk page what deep-seated problems of cultural sensitivity and puerile humor I have seems to undermine the very purpose of this page. Personal Robot Jesus (talk) 05:15, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The purpose of the page is to give information on a mountain. That's all. The dirty joke which is nothing else really has no place in this project. As for sensitivity, I'll give you just one tip for life: if somebody finds humour offensive, then the chances are it is. --Doric Loon (talk) 13:50, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is there such a thing as the right not to be offended? Mikething (talk) 01:41, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely not. MudskipperMarkII (talk) 15:44, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest that the Anglophones win (see header name), due to Doric having absolutely no sense of humour. Also, assuming Doric is German, he seems to exude a particularly stereotypical nature...which makes it all the more amusing. Thanks for brightening up my day! -seldooN — Preceding unsigned comment added by SeldooN (talkcontribs) 17:11, 17 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not German: see my userpage if you want to know about me. Your stereotype speaks volumes about you. --Doric Loon (talk) 16:13, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Doric Loon. This page is for discussing the article, not for insulting other readers. You might like to familiarise yourself with the culture of Wikipedia before making any more personal attacks.113.73.127.168 (talk) 08:55, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Seems bizarre that references to this town's name's unfortunate infamy have been purged, though I guess there's not much point in trying to reinstate them. --—Christine (blathercontribs) 20:22, 18 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why? What relationship does the place in Oregon have with the mountain? Wikipeterproject (talk) 13:21, 25 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Protect?

[edit]

Someone, please protect this. All the vandalism in the past is really bad. Thanks. Shikku27316 (talk) 13:07, 21 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There have been very few edits to the article recently, so not sure why you feel it needs protection now. Wikipeterproject (talk) 05:53, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I just found it. I looked at the history, and it really needs to be protected. --Shikku27316 (talk) 16:21, 23 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure you saw on the page's history that made you think that. The page has been rather stable for quite some time. Wikipeterproject (talk) 07:39, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Wank_(mountain)&diff=next&oldid=389416402 This made me very uncomfortable, and so did many others. It wouldn't hurt.bShikku27316 (talk) 08:41, 25 June 2013 (UTC)--[reply]
That was in 2010! No need to react on that now, almost three years later!! Wikipeterproject (talk) 08:34, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I know. It just really bothered me. Shikku27316 (talk) 04:49, 29 June 2013 (UTC)--[reply]

Should a reference be made in the article to the amusing English interpretation of the mountain’s name? 86.133.243.146 (talk) 01:08, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have not come across this. Give me a moment. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.112.61.83 (talk) 16:58, 22 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
