Copy edit

I attempted to improve some of the wording, grammar, and manual of style issues as well as fixing punctuation. Please let me know if anything further needs to be done, or if I made any glaring mistakes. I also converted the external link to a reference and changed the tag to "ref improve" from "unreferenced".
