Is Union of Cypriots notable?
[edit]There are various citations, but, among the independent RS sources, non of them discuss UoC in extend. Rather, they are brief mentions (ie [1]). Cinadon36 08:56, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- When I look at this page, I have to say it seems like one of the Cyprus-related Wikipeadia page which consist most independent and reliable sources. Unfortunately, it is well known that the pages related to Cyprus usually gets vandalised by Turkish and Greek nationalist Wikipedia users, especially pages like this one. That is why we have to look at the page carefully, and not cherry-pick the most unrelated sources for our examples. When I look at this specific page, I come across citations from sources like Policy Network,[2] Associated Press,[3] Omega,[4] Euroasia Review,[5] SigmaLive,[6] Industrial Worker,[7] which talked about the organisation in extend. I also check checked every single citation and all of them mentions the name of Union of Cypriots or its Greek, Turkish or previous names. Also it is clear even from the translations of the titles of the source (organisation's name is even mentioned in the titles), almost all of the sources talks about the Union of Cypriots in extend. - I do not think that sources discuss the subject in any significant detail except the Policy Network (but having to mention it is not a straightforward case)
- Policy Network is a borderline RS. It is not a news media, or a journal, it is a think tank. Author is Klaudia Kerekes, but site provides no info on her.[8]. She only wrote one article.
- AP does not discuss "Union of Cypriots". Here is the text: Oz Karahan, the Turkish Cypriot president of the left-wing peace association Union of Cypriots, says Turkish Cypriots who lost property of their own in the south empathize with Varosha’s refugees. He’s among many Turkish Cypriots who consider Tatar’s rule illegitimate, claiming his election followed unprecedented Turkish interference. “Turkey’s new policy is clearly aiming to make Varosha part of its ... illegal regime in the north,” Karahan said. Standing in a garden in front of the school he graduated from more than 50 years ago, Simos Ioannou, the Greek Cypriot mayor-in-exile of Famagusta...
- Omega does not either discuss Union of Cyprus, it just says they will attend an anti-NATO event. The superficially of this newspage is evident. It claims that UoC will represent (italics are mine) Cyprus, while it is super-clear that they are not representing RoC, Cyprus or anyone apart themselves.
- Eurasian Review only dedicates 4 sentences on UoC. The topic of the article is not UoC. UoC is briefly mentioned.
- Sigmalive, which does not qualify as a RS in my opinion, does not discuss UoC. In a small article of 4 sentences in total, they report an announcement of UoC (that parallels Sigmalive's right wing narrative). It can not help us build an article, nor it adds any notability points.
- Industrial Worker is not a Reliable Source. And there is no bio info on author.
- I do not think that sources discuss the subject in any significant detail except the Policy Network (but having to mention it is not a straightforward case)
- As I see it, it fails WP:GNC. Cinadon36 10:01, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- I disagree and as I see it is far from failing WP:GNC. The sources that I mentioned above are just a few from this well sourced page. And unfortunately each comment you made is your personal POV. Also this is not a place to talk discuss and judge the political orientation of the organisation or sources. Just one example:
- You mention and make judgement of SigmaLive "report an announcement of UoC (that parallels Sigmalive's right wing narrative)". But as it seems from the source, this news published by ΚΥΠΕ, which is Cyprus News Agency, which is the national news agency of Republic of Cyprus. The same news covered by all media organs of Cyprus, including the "left-wing" Dialogos (online platform of Haravgi).[9]
- Of course I put term of left-wing in "" because here is not a place for declaring an organisation or a source right-wing or left-wing. And even if we declare here that this organisation is "right-wing", while sources such as Associated Press[10] (also mentioned by you) says "the left-wing peace association Union of Cypriots", this talk page will be full of Political POV. And this will just show that this topic created by personal political POV of some Wikipedia users.
- As I see it, and after looking into it more because of this occasion, this page is one of the most internationally and reliable sourced page related to Cyprus. ATSYS (talk) 11:08, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- Brief mentions or announcements do not qualify as significant coverage. So neither haravgi, sigmalive or Cyprus News Agency help to establish notability.Cinadon36 13:23, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- As a Greek-speaker user I need to correct the wrong information provided by the user started this topic. It is very interesting to see such conversation and manipulative information. The Omega article mentioned,[11] clearly says the Union of Cypriots organisation representing "Cyprus" in the mentioned summit. The similar article also published by the Dialogos of Haravgi.[12] Generally the page has combination of sources from think tanks such as Policy Network, journals such as International Policy Digest and Euroasian Review, news articles from Associated Press and Huffington Post, other national news agencies such as Public Broadcasting of Latvia, Cyprus News Agency or Hawar News Agency and magazines such as Modern Diplomacy. Coverages are not brief mentions or announcements, majority of them discuss the organisation in extend. From the article it is clear that this is a notable organisation which even participates in the European Parliament elections and which has ties with communist and socialist global organisations, yet user who created this topic accuses it "right-wing" and writes wrong Greek translation and provides wrong information. I've spend time and checked the other pages in the Cyprus Dispute template and it is clear that this is one of the most well sourced page in the template. Claiming that "Union of Cypriots is not notable" seems like a politically motivated move. ReportX (talk) 14:05, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

- I have never said that UoC is right or left wing. I have said that Sigmalive is right wing. Now as of the sources
- Public Broadcasting of Latvia: An article on Cyprus, hosts some comments (4 sentences) of the president of UoC. This does not qualify as giving significant coverage of UoC.
- Huffington Posts does not even mention Union of Cypriots. It mentions Oz Karajan of Linobambaki organization (maybe the same person as Oz Karahan of UoC) But even so, hosting some comments of the president, does not qualify as significant coverage.
- Hawar does not mention UoC.
- Overall, there is a clear lack of significant coverage by RS. There are some mentions, announcements and comments of UoC president at borderline media. Fails GNC in my opinion. Cinadon36 15:43, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

- Unfortunately this talk page and topic got out of control with wrong and manipulative information. Declaring national media channels "right-wing" or "left-wing" to justify POV, starting topic with an unrelated source example, sharing a wrong Greek translation with the English Wikipedia users with thinking nobody will understand, and now writing information that conflicts with the page. I can see that even other users mentioned that "every single citation and all of them mentions the name of Union of Cypriots or its Greek, Turkish or previous names" and in the page as well as other sources it mentions that organisation's previous names are "Linobambaki" and "World Union of Turkish-speaking Cypriots". (ie. Policy Network paper [13])
- Huffington Post source is from 2015, clearly times when the organisation was named Linobambaki
- Hawar News Agency source is from 2018, clearly times when the organisation was named World Union of Turkish-speaking Cypriots. Text: At the same time, in Cyprus, the World Union of Turkish-Speaking Cypriots (WUTC) was established to fight for the rights of all Cypriots in the face of Turkish aggression and the influx of settlers from Anatolia. WUTC is a non-governmental organisation that practices the pressure for Turkish Cypriots on the international scene. Apart from its political activities, the WUTC has various committees, as well as an educational institution called Fazil Onder Academy, an organisation related to traditional intangible heritage activities.
- Once again, after carefully looking to this 3+ years old page, it is clear that there are significant coverage by RS about the organisation. In my opinion, the quality and the combination of reliable sources (some mentioned in this discussion page) and the facts like this is an internationally recognised organisation (seen from international coverages and its formal international affiliations) which even participates in elections including European Parliament elections and international summits to represent Cyprus, just few things that shows Union of Cypriots is notable.
