[edit]I have found this claim concerning Vohlonen in several places. I cannot understand the claims being made about his inventing the liquid compass. Edward S. Ritchie holds several U.S. patents pertaining to the liquid compass he invented and shortly after sold in quantity to the U.S.Navy. Many of these compasses were "portable" as they were often gimbaled in a wooden box. Oh, by the way, Ritchie's patents preceed those of Vohlonen by almost 70 years! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.245.44.199 (talk) 01:35, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
- I corrected it. It was most likely an oversimplification in wording. Ritchie did not invent the first working liquid-filled compass; Sir Edmund Halley did, in 1690, though it was only a rudimentary demonstration model. Francis Crow received a patent for a working liquid mariner's compass in 1813, and Capt. F.O. Creagh-Osborne received a 1915 patent for a pocket-size liquid compass suitable for land navigation & routefinding by individuals afoot or on horseback - for which the bulky Ritchie marine compass was entirely unsuitable. Vohlonen's patent was nevertheless a real breakthrough. In the early 1930s, more than one person/company was attempting to perfect a compact, inexpensive, lightweight sealed-capsule liquid compass (which did not require yearly servicing), but only Vohlonen's included key innovations on the method of sealing the compass housing inside a unitary material (celluloid), which proved necessary to successful mass production. This led directly to the modern compact liquid-damped compass of today.Special:Contributions/Don01 (talk) 16:04, 24 November 2008 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.72.119.38 (talk) 16:04, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
