Chevalier de Tromelin, Ensign de Tromelin

[edit]

There were three Tromelin brothers, all Navy officers, during this period. The older, Bernard-Marie Boudin de Tromelin, is usually called "Chevalier de Tromelin", but they all had that title. An archaeological website [1] mentions that the Tromelin who captained Dauphine had the rank of Ensign. The rescue occurred on 29 November 1776. Bernard de Tromelin had been promoted to Lieutenant on 1 May 1763, so that would rule him out. There is a commemorative post stamp of the TAAF [2] with the dates of the youngest of the brothers, Jacques Marie Boudin de Tromelin de La Nuguy, or Tromelin-Lanuguy. This is not a reliable source, but it certainly strengthens suspicions. I have academic History books on related issues on the way, which I hope could decide the matter.
